And you think the present bureaucratic system is good and fair? We need a system that rewards those that work hard and struggle. Automation is the real challenge.

Very true. Please propose your workable solution.

There are a lot who work and struggle. I doubt anyone here would argue that people should not get a decent wage for a days work. And I would like to hear the rest of the story. Does guaranteed basic income mean most welfare programs that support the able-bodied will disappear? The unions would scream blue murder to see that go down.

It is actually sad that people could be satisfied with only receiving $1800 per month, you can't buy a decent vehicle, can't go anywhere and experience new things, just collect a cheque, pay your cable bill and stare at a tv....what a life.

Automation isnt a challenge to a country with trillions in natural resources that cant be replicated anywhere else.

Hey but lets just ignore all that and just run up the credit card for people to play video games and surf twitter.

If UBI is implemented it needs to be a bargain. if you are getting $1800 free money to do nothing, then you give back to the community in some way. Lots of graffiti and garbage to deal with in our cities. Or you give up your right to vote because you are a life long dependent and deserve no say in the direction of this country.

I think that is the key. If this goes ahead, it needs to find that balance. Most people will not be satisfied to just survive at subsistence levels.

And anyone who is satisfied to not work and lead a productive life, and better their( and our collective) well being is better off on a guaranteed income harmlessly sitting in their parents basement, campaigning for the NDP. We really don't want them in the workforce. They are a cancer on the remainder of the workforce. And I'm sure we have all worked with some prime examples.

The rest of us will pay the UBI back with our taxes, and continue to be productive members of society, unencumbered by trying to find a way to fit the toxic Chuck's of the world into the workforce.

$1800 a month to do nothing is not much? Really? Most the world's population work there ass off to earn a hundred or $200 a month. They make do.

Not in Canada they wouldnt. They cost of living here would swamp someone making $1800 a month. welfare is only $1100.

basically its in mom and dads basement or stuck in a shtbox slum apt somewhere.

But seeing how generous we are to the non productive, if snowbirds can collect OAS in Mesa, then I suppose lifelong deadbeats can collect UBI in Costa.
