Well, a week has gone by and the snow still hasn't gone away.
I love the pictures posted the last few days. Out seeding just perfect conditions and in the background, you see at the other side of the field a snowbank sticking 100 ft out into the field. Sort of like the Skinny kid flexing his muscles and in the mirror, his mommy is taking the picture.
We have the usual suspects starting up in Regina today and probably Indian head Monday.
Here is a note to help out a cold snap that will be setting in the second week of May. Canola will be frozen back to the ground in Western Canada.
For us, it looks like a start date will be April 30th or May 3, or May 5th. Ok, it's a week-long guess but with the snowbanks, we still have I will bet that is when it's a go time. Our newest Canadian who is a transplant from Alberta is working every acre he can break up. Good on you for taking pasture and making it productive. He isn't afraid of work that's for sure. It did get two others to go out and disc froze ground that was broken the past winter. Got to go.
The last of the grain is getting cleaned and guys are either waiting for drills to arrive or tires for their new drills as duals are not on yet. Parts are short like everything and covid has shut down a few businesses. Seed and chemicals are arriving daily plus the last of the coated starter fertilizer. I'm doing my part to help Justin achieve his 30% reduction in Nitrogen. Again the Feds have zero clues that reducing fert like nitrogen by 30% would cut our yields huge with no replacement. Also in his budget the **** up part of the money for special grain dryers. Unless I have been living in a bubble the only way to dry grain effectively is with natural gas or propane and dry the grain. Solar and wind is what is suppose to happen in the field. Skippy and team diversity don't get farming is it our fault for not teaching them or are stupid people just not ever going to get it.
Tractors are out of the shed and getting serviced and fueled up ready for spring.
This next week you will see lots starting to harrow and burn and stone pick with the odd guy trying to seed.
Land hunt is on but looks like most deals are done for the year and the new guys are either BTOs, New Canadian Alberta transplants, or Forced purchase by the long term renters.
Canola and all grains are on fire and next week in Canada we have the official stats Canada report coming out.
Here are my seeding intentions.
Because of the look, what canola is worth today and some farmers don't get you still have to grow a crop and dry conditions don't help plus fall isn't even close to today's prices.
Canola will be 22 mil acres
Spring wheat down to 16 mil
Durum 6 mil
Barley 9.5
Oats 3.9
Peas 4
Lentils 4.5
Flax 1
Wheat will be down because it's costly and the price doesn't reflect the worth of the crop.
8.37 x 90 works Not everyone can get these numbers so wheat will be down. Durum will be up because the south is dry and durum does the best.
Barley is going way up and up and up. because 6 feed barley at 100 is a nice payday for a crop that isn't that hard to grow. Oh, wait anyone ever see it so dry that Barley heads and is stuck in the boot and never lets the head out. Yea big yields all right.
Peas are up in Manitoba because they don't have the disease we have in Alberta and Sask from growing peas that the pulse growers continue to not address and just push for markets on a crop we can no longer grow. 8 years between works but you need lots of land to make that work.
Lentils and flax will be up as guys see last year price and will seed plus dry weather these to do better than canola.
Canola like I said all guys see is the $20 a bushel and they think 60 is achievable
So maybe something in the budget for farmers incorporated a program where you can spend up to 1.5 mil and get a tax incentive off your federal taxes for that year in that amount sort of like the programs in the 80s buy a tractor before midnight on the 30th of Dec.
The rest of the budget was a shit show nothing for Carbon sequestration and mostly bullshit programs with fluff and nothing more.
Oh, deere Thanks for the **** up on the sat system and now going out to redo a bunch of receivers and etc charging farmers again for tec change that you're causing. Oh, some beacons those guys changed up to won't arrive in time for spring.
Rubber shortage on vehicles and maybe farm tires coming. Order an SUV and not get it because it's on blocks at the factory.
Fun times but the reality is really not much moisture added in the last week we have a few storms moving through but it funny every time moisture is on the way the temps go from plus 15 to -10 and light snow.
Covid is bad as one of my son's X co-workers died in Regina he wasn't very old but it took him fast. Lots getting vaccinated but some are not getting it because they are young and maybe their children will grow to heads if they do. Millennials will be the group not taking and well see how that works out. For the rest, I feel you won't be able to travel unless you have the shots and it might be a yearly shot with your flu shot.
Canada's biggest debt ever. Skippy will have added more debt in 7 years than all the previous PMs in Canadian history combined.
Wow, all liberals must be happy. They should have to pay for this not the rest of us.
Enjoy the up-down weather, stay safe and enjoy clean wide open Western Canada.
