There must have been a lot of phone calls into Sask Crop Insurance to get that concession. Good on them though.

If a full scale drought takes hold...private insurers will be on the government doorstep as well.

SCIC has a billion+ dollar surplus doesnt it? Might get used up this yr. I have max coverage on canola as usual.
A lot of FOMO in canola this yr. Guys who sold too soon last yr might struggle to get a crop this yr.
And high prices in canola are not all good thing. Canada owns that market and if we cant supply it for a second yr, who knows what happens. $20 canola might prompt someone in the southern states or FSU to give it a shot.Last edited by jazz; May 14, 2021, 07:01.

Had they done what the US has and dribbled money out to the tune of 100s of billions linked in with the rest of the pandemic pay ...not many would be saying phuck it if this drought takes hold.
Agriculture through the pandemic has been ignored in Canada...and commentators , experts and others say its because of good prices we don't need help..
Much like Townsend's canola predictions ,,,it just sounds stupid . Agriculture has shown how important it is to this country's economy....
If this country has 10 billion for the air line industry....I would say agriculture might need the same attention.

Peas and wheat are in the ground here. Working on canola. Weeds are showing up the last few days, up until now there has been nothing to spray. Scouted a field last night that had been seeded on May 4 and was planning to do a post seed pre emerge application but the wheat was just breaking through. Soil moisture here is ok so far. Pastures finally staring to green up but one field of alfalfa seems to have areas that have winter killed, hope I am wrong. Certainly hoping for rain on the long weekend.

I once waited too long to post seed spray...was looking into the sun and could see the rows on the outside rounds...I quit spraying ...cleanest and best part of the crop was where I had done my opening round with the post seed burnoff spray...
If they are just poking through....talk to an agrologist.....it might still be on the seed and much like a one leaf wild oat...it may be hard to kill.
But DYODD..I am far from any kind of an expert.

When I look at the picture of Woodland's son holding the net wrap, I can't help but think of how we're letting him down arguing about Covid, Trump, climate, etc. These are "bottomless pit" arguments. Throw everything at these subjects and nothing makes a clink in the bottom.
That boy's heritAGe is agriculture and his future may be too. What will it look like though? If we want to argue freedom, arguing the freedom to farm is a REAL issue.
We're bombarded by alt left politicians trying to reimagine our industry, animal activists planning what's nothing more than terrorism against us. Anti GMO and anti glyphosate psychos trying to force their agendas on our industry. As for social license, they can shove that up their ass and see if that's sustainable.
It's too dry to seed anymore acres right now. All I can do is pick stones and rant. Crop emergence has that droughty, patchy look like we saw in the '80s.Last edited by Braveheart; May 15, 2021, 13:09.

There is a crazy mice infestation happening down there right now.
Watch the video embedded in this story of the mice crawling over that grain pile:
https://www.abc.net.au/news/2021-05-11/farmers-step-up-battle-as-mice-plague-worsens/100130198
Finished fieldwork today, will hose down, and start putting equipment away tomorrow. Supposed to rain Monday night and Tuesday.
