Seeding had stalled out this week with the welcome rain. Yes, rain makes grain but come on markets one little rain isn't a crop and it didn't fill the gas tank that was on fumes going into the 2021 spring. But yes it was welcome and like the old adage says You are given just enough rope so you don't hang yourself. Sorry to offend anyone who sells rope.
I love all the terms Billion dollar rain blah blah blah. Oh, it froze every ****ing night for the last 2 to 7 in some places but that means nothing.
Last night's lows for our farm 0 at 4:20 now it's +1. The night before it was colder for longer. Reseeding will happen in some spots in the west and yes some areas didn't get much rain out of the Billion Dollar rain but maybe the pump is primed for a wetter June. Drew still has July Hot.
Total Rain on our farm is anywhere from 2.26 in. Since April 1 to over 3 in. It was sure nice to see it rain and for once it was a slow rain. So should soak in. Some sloughs are back where you were seeding may be the first time in 20 years.
Here Is the Crop Report.
Seeding is moving slowly but will pick up today and tomorrow. We are at 88% done and will start again later today. Some going to the East yesterday on lighter land. North all way to the lake at Canora lots of Wheat stubble left to seed. Oh for the super crop advisors that means Canola wasn't going into the ground until the moisture came.
Hrs is all planted in our area and some of the early seeded looks to be filling in nice now that the rain came. This year compared to last year early seeded cereals look better. The only thing I notice is most fields are a yellow-looking color.
Barley is all seeded in most areas and the frost has nipped its wings a bit but it should bounce back ok. The new variety AC Connect looks good. Well see if it's a keeper but some companies offered a malt contract on it so maybe it will be the replacement for Copeland.
Peas are slow to come up on all fields maybe it's a good thing they were treated because man they are slow. This next week we should see them jump very fast.
Lentils a few fields this year due to dry but we usually get rain so it's a hit and miss on making money, real big money on lentils.
Flax is all seeded and only a few fields are left.
Canary seed is going in after the rain event on a few fields in the area but not many.
Canola is going to be interesting as always because stuff seeded now will catch the stuff seeded early real fast as the last two cool nights will nip at the plants and kill some early seeded fields. Usually, the same thing happens every year. Flea beetles will or could be an issue come next week.
Nice to see all the crops starting to show some kind of growth and the warm weather next week along with the moisture we got plus maybe the global warming will finally start showing up. Yea it's June next week our next two months are awesome to be in Saskatchewan from Fishing to camping to golfing to just relaxing taking your Touque off and enjoying Canada.
