    Oats

Any oats being seeded this year? I put a bit in and still have some unpriced from last year. I figured that with almightly feed barley out there, nobody would seed oats. Anyways price action in oats has been uninspiring as my best sale is 4.60/bu delivered Camrose in July, which is from the main oat buyer in this region. Prices this year have been only marginally higher than the levels achievable that past number of years. Seems oats are not on the inflation speculators radar screen it seems. So it looks like it will take an actual shortage to move prices higher.

Still sitting on about half my oats. The best I got was 4.50 and since then they have dropped to around 4.00 locally. Kept half because we often see a good price jump late in the marketing year but am not sure that will happen this summer.
Didn't plant any this year just because they most often end up in bags and I am just getting tired of feeding the Governments ballooning big game herd.

Oats is a much, much, smaller market.
If feed grade then it is last choice after barley and wheat.
      I seed oats.

Oats knows or oats blows. More barley went in here as it looked dry at seeding and oat prices and movement is a pain in the ass. If the peace region is in decent shape there’ll be ample supply. Imagine with covid putting the Kibosh on a lot of fairs and horse events demand for pony oats is down.

Shoulda waited 'til July, priced June at $4.50, Camrose. But hey that's still good. I like oats, seems like a stable market, low inputs, 125 to 150 bu. of heavy 47 lb., easy to harvest, and dry if necessary, and I sell the straw. What's not to like?

I spend as much on oats as wheat. Since buyers are twitchy about preharvest glyphosate I’ve relegated them to grass breaking and cow feed. I prefer straight cutting and no preharvest makes it a challenge in a damp fall. Still need to broadcast oats on brushing my dad did but raining again. 😋
