Does Western society today have any legitimate claim to moral or ethical superiority?
I think if the internet wasn’t what it is there would be much less moral or ethical superiority than there is. The chance of exposure keeps people more accountable.

That said, many people working within these schools probably thought they were morally and ethically superior and thusly could do what they did. Just because someone feels superior or justified, does not mean their actions are that way to others.

Yes, they did. A lot of the inspectors used the schools as their own personal playgrounds, the rest mostly just didn’t care. More than one MP way back made personal “inspections” of the girls (and sometimes boys) dormitories because it was safer than going to hookers or having an affair with a secretary.

I’ll never forget reading the story of a 12 year old girl giving birth alone with the priest in his room, then watching him throw his own newborn son alive into the wood stove so he wouldn’t have to explain how she had a half-white baby when he was the only white man around

Are you serious, or did you mean this as a bitter joke?

It's hard to read sarcasm, if that's what you meant.

But in case you were serious, how do you explain the swinish illegal actions of a certain prime minister who has more ethics violations, corruption dealings and procedural malfeasance than all the others put together?

Is it because he has no internet exposure?

Or does he enjoy immunity because he is morally and ethically superior, as you say?

As far as that goes, as much as organized religion needs to be accountable for its wrongs, why is there not an equal outpouring of broad condemnation for politicians, for corrupt scientists, etc?

Make those pigs pay for their own screw ups. Don't hand me the bill.

Residential schools are a federal charge.

Therefore, the head of government bears the greatest responsibility for what went down there.

it just so happens that the current prime minister is a "legal descendant" to the 3rd longest-serving prime minister of Canada.

Since he is so good at righting past wrongs, maybe Justin should be apologizing doe his legal father's part in the horrific suffering of those innocent children who perished in those federally-mandated schools.

And maybe he should help pull down any statues of P.E.T.

Had P.E.T. no knowledge whatsoever of the atrocities happening in those places?

Can the Sock Puppet actually have any part in getting to the bottom of this mess without implicating his legal father?

PET also presided over the majority of the 60s scoop, first as justice minister, then prime minister. Keep in mind Justin’s grandfather was also a cabinet minister

                That seems significant.

I'm sure that CBC will bring this to our attention soon. And demand answers from Justin. Like, hold him accountable.

Blaithin, you can crank your moral outrage to 100. That doesnt change the fact that, terrible as they maybe have been, nobody alive today had any hand in those policies. The current pope has no responsibility for what a pope sanctioned 100 yrs ago. Neither do people sitting in the pews.

So theres the dilemma. I am not going to be tarred with the guilt from a policy and outcome that predates my existence and unknown by my illiterate predecessors. There wasnt a residential school or a reserve within 200 miles of where they got dumped.

Is it Canadas problem? You bet, the govt of Canadas problem and me as a tax payer. Thats where it ends.

There are approx 200 reserves in Canada. Trudeau could have taken the $500B flushed into nothing during covid and settled the score once and for all. Gave every reserve $2.5B to upgrade facilities, buy land and invest in income generating ventures for their people. Now that will never happen as Canada teeters on insolvency.

This letter was in the NP today. Clearly this survivor blames the govts and especially the recent ones.
