That Kindersley dump on Saturday wasn't very wide, 3 inches in town, 3 tenths at the airport (3 miles north), 2 tenths at the FIL's (3 miles south)

30 miles east of stettler 4mm we will be very lucky to get 60 percent of normal yield.

Yeah I was helping hay out there this weekend. Broke a bale an acre at least.

The best my brother got was 1/4 bale per acre and down from there.

Honeybees 75ft triplex pusher would be necessary to make a hay swath on established stands around here. 1/2 section about 3 miles from me seeded in the latter 90s and *maybe* 10% of the crested wheat headed out.

This year the hay never had a chance, Frost after frost, ridiculously dry start , recipe for nix bales. Maybe if ot started to rain, we’d get a second cut.🙏

Yes all those frosts certainly effected all crops over many areas in western Canada

How significant is the hay/pasture shortage, and its effect on grain demand?

Assuming anyone with livestock would have to make the decision to turn some crops into feed.

The price of hay should motivate some straight grain farmers to do the same?

If not, then there will be a lot more demand for feed grains to fill in the gap.

So, not only will there be a shortage of feed next winter, but if( when ) the pasture season gets cut short, the shortage gets even more acute.

Assuming not too many herds get liquidated, and with no where to liquidate to ( as there would be in a regional drought situation), that probably isn't a great option.

I haven't done the math. Is the additional cow feed component of grain demand a drop in the bucket compared to the usual markets, or a big deal?
