Friday Crop Report on a Thursday!

Didn't look at canola today had to repair tire on mixing wagon picked up a deer horn in pasture. Day before put a stone through the back window with discbine. Hay crop isn't thick enough to stop the covers from flipping forward. Saving money on twine this year but spending a little more on glass

Missed the rain here too.
Usually in our area, cells from SW to NE, or sometimes just straight east,,, changed up on us tonight and decided to move from NW to SE, very different.

1 cwad finally $10 unfortunately the bins are rattlin in the wind and the durum is starting to go backwards.

Ma Nature is definitely doing her part in destroying the “supply” part of the equation here.

Average looking barley for us.

A foot or so tall and half is dying like the left and our not so ugly stuff on the right has beards just coming out. Sure glad I didn’t presell any as now I will probably be buying just for our own use this winter.



Well our late seeded canola finally germinated and looks great until you realize it’s July and not early June. I wonder what stage it’ll be when it’s time card gets punched one day………

Hauled some cows onto a quarter of grass we haven’t touched yet and they better eat it before it dies and the hoppers get it. They really showed up with the heat now. Probably got grass till the end of the month unless the taps turn on.

The only thing enjoying the heat has been the corn but it’s nearing its limit as well. It was wilting, turning blue, and rolling it’s leaves like onion stalks last week. Looks better after a half inch the other day and a couple cooler days.


Sure glad we upped the acres of corn as it seems to be the only thing that’s doing somewhat ok in these nasty conditions. At least the critters are all doing good considering the heat. My cousin lost two water wells in two weeks. Not sure if it’s from the drought or the coal mine but it sure messes things up in hurry.

The breeding heifers were happy the other night when I moved them to fresh grass and dropped off the bulls. Not sure if I’m certified insane to be breeding so many in these conditions but I’ll know for sure next year. Guess we like it since it sure ain’t being done for the money this year.

Definitely glad for crop insurance since it’ll hopefully allow us to play again next year………………….🍀

Are you able to insure the corn for grazing too? Did you have the crystal ball polished up well enough to insure the hay and pasture too?

Well, the rain lotto went west to the west of us and south to southeast. A poster that is no longer on agriville got the million-dollar rain last night way to go. I passed the garden of Eden onto him.

Some nice totals for the rain to the south of us an area had an Inch. Water sitting by Edgeley only a mile or two wide and to the west of us the storm that headed back west gave some up to half inch.

Perhaps that's what it takes to make for localized rain is to leave this place? How's Mallee doing? If he's getting rain that'd make it 2.

There is no doubt we were very fortunate to have received some rain last weekend, it certainly helped. I have drove around from Wetaskiwin to Balzac looking at headers this week and there is certainly a large difference in crop conditions. Ponoka-Wetaskiwin area crops were definitely short of moisture, hilltops very thin. South of Linden almost to Balzac crops were extremely short. Canola in full bloom 12 inches tall, peas and wheat maybe 8-10 inches tall, wheat headed out, looked very dry. My understanding is from Carbon south even worse but I haven’t seen it with my own eyes. Right around Red Deer-Lacombe crops look very good, obviously more showers in that area.

Looking at the weather forecast this morning, in the next 2 weeks only 2 days with a chance of rain, one 40%, one 70% and 3-4 days of +30*. Fields with lighter soil are already burning up in this area. Early seeded canola crops are already done flowering, I haven’t had a chance to stop and take a close look at pod development. So far the cows haven’t run out of something to eat but with present weather forecast it is certainly a concern. Without rain crops will start to go backwards, no doubt in my mind.
