Friday Crop Report on a Thursday!

I officially quit looking at the forecast today it’s easy look outside clear and windy chance of *** all for rain go to the lake repeat

Remember the years the Wheat Board would limit exports do to lack of production and lock farmers out of world price rally’s? This will be one of those years that guys that got rains will capitalize on.

Hot and dry here but finally get to work on some summer jobs that have been put off because of wetness.
Cleaned the trees off a line a few years ago and now trying to get it in shape.
The half mile line had a barbed wire fence under the grass and then a single file line of rocks under the wire the whole half mile.
Makes me think of a story I used to hear about one of the local ladies. This young lady was well known in the area for being very homely or not blessed with good looks but she did grow up on the adjacent quarter. When she was young she was out in the fields picking roots and rocks and likely the rocks I am picking today she picked way back when she was young. Apparently on a lot of Friday nights her Dad would give her a dollar for working all week and she would walk to our local town which was seven and a half miles away and drink beer with the local gentleman. Story goes that she never had to buy more than one drink and she always got a ride home! . She has been gone a few years now.

To really add insult to injury, the County has been dredging out the road ditches and I get the dirt for filling in holes in the fields. It is full of all the rocks (and fenceposts and garbage) that has been thrown to the fence or dumped in the ditches all these years, so I got to pick all those for a second time too.

Needless to say, when I pick a rock now, I make sure it is for the last time.

Went to Regina last night ,crops look awesome from lumsdan in .Talked to a guy from Indian head they had an inch on Thursday .Then met a guy from Ceylon he said they had over 2 inches this week.Brother went to estavan on Thursday and said crops look good all the way from Regina . I guess this will be a good year for the area Regina south and east. Our 2.3 inches of rain this year has to be a record low for us with nothing but heat in the forecast . There is barley here that will see a combine in 10 days maybe less.

Try to resist the urge to look at the 2 week forecast. OMG this thing is so over. Couple guys with some fluky showers wont cover for the carnage about to happen.

My neighbors canola seeded a month after mine is 6 inches tall and starting to bolt. No winners in the later crop either.

Are you able to insure the corn for grazing too? Did you have the crystal ball polished up well enough to insure the hay and pasture too?

My crystal ball is far too murky for me to figure out anymore.

Our corn and hay/pasture is insured under lack of moisture(rainfall) which is great as long the weather station gets the same rainfall as you. Ours is 45 km away close to my in-laws and they’ve gotten a couple inches more than us. Oh well at least I don’t have to go to the casino since it’s like playing roulette.

Better than nothing but far from perfect. There is a couple pits of silage squirrelled away as our true homemade insurance program. Definitely will be using them this year.

The apprentices are growing up fast here. 😉


Tonight was the first time we turned them loose to herd cows to new grass. They did great in the open while my wife and I checked the bush and such. They were pretty excited when they heard a “yes” to their usual question of if they could help us.

A pretty proud papa here today😎
