    Is It Time For Oats

To catch up to the canola, barley and wheat rallies. Oats have not reacted to this summer’s grain rally, still sub $4 in our area, Melfort Viterra $3.32 for July, September $3.72. Was to Saskatoon this afternoon, lots of barley fields, hardly any oat fields, all pretty ugly. Still holding on to all of last years oats, sort of missed the spring rally, looking like it will get marketed in 2022. Sounds like another 10 days of heat with no rain, market has to take notice soon, your thoughts?

Quite a few fields will get opened up for cow feed if not the whole field. If you got heavy oats and the germ is good you might have other options.

The rest of my oats are waiting for prices to rise and I think they will do that end of Aug time frame. New crop shrinking fast. Last sale was 4.60 into Camrose. US oat crop was smallest since records began in 1866 but it came off early and they don't bin it down there. Once that small crop is worked through they will be shopping north of the border. Don't think the bin doors swing for under $5 now.

No need to worry, most oats crops will fry off next week if not already. $5+ oats on the way if you have any left.

More oats in east central AB than have seen for decades.

Very short just over knee high but have headed and most look great. The odd fields burnt brown but only 10% of what I saw yesterday. 6 hour central AB road trip,,, if heat stays below 30 mostly enough subsoil moisture in may areas to see good rooting and reproductive performance for conditions. Many in our area (perhaps 60-70% had 6” in May to July 5…

Will be interesting to see how newer varieties react to short rain… Many many be surprised on many crops.

Barley looks by far most stressed… most wheat 50% or better of normal.

Peas about the same as wheat… in many places. St Paul area has been hanging on with their 6”… Westlock Barrhead variable with some poor and many fair crops… as some areas get better crops when it is dry with peat soils.

This is far from a written off crop in Alberta for the majority of the crops in north central Alberta.

            Cheers

Still have some here waiting for the spring summer rally hopefully.
Lots of oats grown in this area and they are real short and sufferings from drought. If no rain shows up soon the oats will be low yielding and light weight.
