Weve had bad heat early, and are VERY used to bad heat in july, but the timing of this was about the worst I've ever seen. Cereal crops that were in the process of head development in the stem got absolutely roasted. Heads have just barely emerged from the sheath if they were far enough along, and many others aren't even going to get a head out!

Those heads that didnt make it out of the boot are sterile! They aren't changing color yet, but they have not flowered either! Completely empty. There are a few fields where only 15-20% of the heads made it out, and even if they had theres a stand for maybe 15-20 if they all filled. So 20% of 20bu/ac now? All a few guys will do is hit low spots, water runs, and around rock piles with the combine.
Everything will turn when the moisture comes...it will be like using reglone...Rain will be desiccant from now on ,,,,oh and a weed grower

A pre seed app in the spring is quite often ineffective due to the growth cycle of the plant but in my opinion does help. Many of my neighbours skipped a pre seed app this spring and the foxtail barley has gone crazy. A pre-harvest in the fall is quite often too late and the plant has already gone to seed. Tillage certainly helps. Foxtail barley in no doubt a challenge but not a resistance issue in my opinion.

In 2002 we had wheat fields where anything double seeded didn’t make it into head and the heads were sterile just as you have indicated.

On running a good header, yes it looks extravagant but:
My 10 year old combine puts on 30% less hours in badly pushed down peas and can pick that hailed flat crop at 4.5mph missing very little crop.
Then this spring we were able to seed through this mulch that remains without working in the pea vines… while providing wonderful cover to preserve moisture.

When We were seeding the Canola this spring, I figured if we slowed down to 3.5mph and worked through the pea vines without vertical tilling them in, perhaps we could save an extra 1” of moisture for the 2021 canola that we hope to harvest this fall!
The MacDon Flex D r a p e r Dividers work second to none as the split reel can be set very close on the outside of the header while not cutting any of the reel fingers off in the middle of the header when it flexes over uneven ground flawlessly.

Sometimes good equipment can pay back much more than the increased cost of owning it! Plus the combine works better than ever without ingestion of rocks etc.
        Cheers
