Our ranch will have enough grass and feed to get through till next year with carry over but what I’m concerned about are the folks that buy our backgrounded calves have the feed.

Price wise how would they compare to feeding rolled barley?

No ...they waited it out for the government to give the company and employees wages subsidies and an 8 billion dollar bail out.

I admire the solutions you guys have presented...but with a wide angle view , respectfully, your farms will pay for the airline tickets, the wages of airline employees and the bailout of Air Canada.

While you receive nothing but more attacks on the way "beef is bad" by SJWs.

I believe that western Canadian farmers are worth more than Air Canada, Algoma and the aerospace industry that have received over 12 billion since January 2020. And if you look back at the history of those three entities they have been on the government tit since their beginnings.

Farmers have been duped again by bad leadership. Period.
You can park a plane and lower costs.

You can’t park a cow. Just owning them is costing you as much money as it always does.

We can’t sit back and not buy feed until we get gov money. The cows need to eat. The guys selling feed want money up front, many so far are not even that willing to take a deposit to hold. They know someone else will come along and give them the cash now. Also a deposit is a scary idea with stories of feed being sold out from under people. It’s dog eat dog right now.

Crop guys can sit and wait for insurance adjusters to come out and tell them what’s what. Cattle guys want the crop guys to not wait because time doesn’t work for us. We need to know feed sources now and quality is going to quickly drop.

Guys that have a large stock pile can more afford to wait to see if the gov comes to any decisions. Most will not be willing to risk that wait though.

The money came instantly for Air Canada through wage subsidies to the tune of 500 million.

How would 500 million in the short term help out some cattle guys????

Well coming from my tiny herd perspective, it would probably make it worse actually.

Sky high prices would absolutely be paid by those who received some of that 500 million and those of us that didn’t would be royally ****ed.

I would do whatever I could to avoid taking money from the government. We took money through the CAIS program (was it 2004?) and had to pay it back. I would rather dip into my savings than take money from them. During BSE we worked extra hard for extra nothing for almost 10 years until cattle prices started to come back up. Man those were lean years. During drought years it is our bush pasture that saves us. We try to stick to our farms' program no matter what weather is thrown at us. If you keep chasing around after the 'best' program for your farm, you will never catch up. Some years you win and some you lose. Proper planning prevents piss poor performance.

Good luck to everyone. Tough times.

Best management practices help but some are not doing that because the neighbours have 5 more head than them...then its a pissing match and neither have enough pasture ...should we help them...probably not but this drought is well past the idiocy of some people. Maybe they can learn from it.
