Bloomberg reports the number of rail cars unloading grain at the Port of Vancouver the first week of July fell 77% y-o-y as wildfires hinder rail movement.

Is this consequential to current markets?
Or is this reflecting the lack of crop left to move, and blame is instead assigned to forest fires?

I talked to the most wildly optimistic retailer that I know. He makes bold ridiculous claims about all the snake oil they sell and about the farmers who buy their inputs there. None of his clients grow less than a 65 canola. I asked him how he thought the crops were, he said, “20 25 if we’re lucky.” That’s the most pessimistic thing I’ve heard all year.

Sorry to play devils advocate, but what is the urgent need for price accurate discovery right now before combines even roll? If Ag Canada stated something like 12MMTs and the price shot to $30 who does that help right now? None of us have anything to sell and guys are stuck in these contracts. Some might even be tempted to forward contract out to 2022. There is lots of time for revisions and to grab price premiums just like last yr.

I would say AgCanada did a lot of guys who got over their skis a big favour, now its up to all of us to take advantage of it. Get out of those contracts, get the fans and cables ready, get your cash advance app and put this sucker into he vault for 9 months.

Three weeks ago, August to December delivery #3 CWAD, $11.00, HVK 80. Yesterday, August to September delivery, same stuff, $15.00. Somebody is in trouble, likely farmers.

Certainly a huge area of poor crop but there are also some pretty good growing areas that have average crops and in small pockets above average.
