Last year when the pandemic hit how long before the wage subsidies , CERB, CEBA student help etc came into effect?

While everyone needed help.... why the delay to agriculture?

Three reasons, wrong area of the country(western Canada), no voting power and apparently lack of a strong government lobby. Look at dairy and egg producers. Higher percentage in eastern Canada, strong producer organization lobbying government. Large processors like Saputo based in Quebec. Not hard to figure.

Provincial governments here have too many mega
Farmers and old politicians that are making money
And expanding farms off of the usually smaller farms
That are lost due to weather blips and no programs.
The land capital and input capital types all benefitted
Greatly from ineffective programs. It’s actually in a way
A scam we re all playing their game.

Our provincial government won’t ask for any meaningful
Help because they’d have to put their share in.
Quebecers are much smarter they cry they get money
Usually from us indirectly then we only cry that we’re
Giving them money were never smart enough to
Get it back through for example a drought cash
Program. How would that not benefit our entire province?

I feel the biggest difference is the capacity of farmers to survive a disaster in the short term is greater than that of the general public who cerb etc was directed at. Stats show more than a third of Canadians have lss than a month of savings should they lose their income. Over 50 percent have less than 10,000 in emergency savings, less than what a farmer spends if he blows an engine that is as unexpected as losing your job because of a government mandated shutdown of the economy.

That is not to say farmers will not be hurt even more by a disaster over the long term, but it gives government time to plan.

There are exceptions like cattlemen who have no pasture and used up carryover feed stocks already. Emergency aid is needed now for these guys and faster government action is needed not only by the feds but provincial levels who must ask for aid from te feds.

Unfortunately I am not expecting that the feds will do anything, beyond say use their existing programs. Yes I know that the Libs were throwing money around like crazy this past couple of years but the ag sector is not going to be in their corner come election day either way. Trouble is even if it was the PC's in power I don't expect it would be any different regarding a per acre payment you would like to see. For me I am very interested to see how some of these private margin insurance programs pay out in a year like this. From my perspective they have been a work in progress for years and will continue to evolve. If those outfits that sell that insurance can make it work good enough then income protection will be available to those that want it. I am very interested if they pay out the penalties to grain companies for non delivery on contracts the way many are suggesting.

I noticed that in ag Canada’s canola estimate, it looks like they jumped out of the truck once around Weyburn, took a sample and said ya, this is as good as last year. Anybody for a round of golf? When they drew the line for the rancher tax deferral tho, they had that down to deflecting the line every mile. Walked into the sloughs to see if the poor plucker might be able to scrounge up a few reed canary,Canada thistle bales. Up to their knees and no deferral for you.. Doesn’t matter to us, we will get by. Hill and hollow pothole country usually has some grass somewhere. Guys south of us are in for some hard times. If we miss the fall rains, this is going to be a pretty sad area for a good while.

Bucket, if you could plot the distribution of govt support programs, you will find most went into cities, especially those down east. Covid support was more a vote buying scheme than a real economy support.

Had we taken $500B and put it into the S&P500 a yr ago, Canada would be debt free by now.

A lot of people lost jobs in western Canada including in the oil and gas sector and wouldn't have been able to pay rent and put food on the table. And your solution is to invest all the support programs in the stock market so we would be debt free? LOL

Not only that farmers were getting some of the covid support programs along with their spouses and family members. There were several threads on Agrisilly about how to apply.

Alberta and Saskatchewan premiers were also asking the federal government for more support programs.

I have an idea, lets put all the crop insurance and safety net payments and disaster payments that farmers are asking for in the stock market instead of trying to save some farmers from going broke this year because of the drought so we can get to debt free as soon as possible.

The US has thrown more than $12T at this over reaction. It was a once in a life time opportunity to invest in the US stock market or oil or commodities or anything. Japan does it every day. I did it and made more money than a yr of farming.

Justin through it down the toilet like all liberal schemes. Take a drive around once, most of those businesses that got support have gone under, the rest have raised prices so high, they will be next. And we still have 10% UE in this country which sounds great to socialists. I know of lot of people who threw in the towel during covid.
