Only mangles I heard of were some kind of root crop used as animal feed in some of my dads circa 1920’s animal husbandry textbooks.
Did the shish satisfy? I hope it met or better still, exceeded your expectations…

They were really good but a gas barbecue doesn’t really bring out the old Russian flavour of hot poplar coals. This is big experiment weekend. Also in talking with a kinda oldish Turk who says mangling is the king of barbecuing, and brush meat with mayonnaise (they buy some Turkish paste in a tube that is a meat dressing made with mayonnaise). This is big birthday weekend before the big giddy up go time Sheepwheat.😂 Maybe a little vodka would perk up the troops even more.

You know when I saw the title I thought of my Dad. it seems like the world is falling apart and I do really worry about the future for my kids and it makes me sad. Obviously though you are talking about something else but I’ll tell my story anyways if you don’t mind.
Anyways back to welding a mangle. It was 1992 and I was 12 and given the awesome responsibility of using the rotary harrow for the first time. My dad called it crazy harrowing. Anyways we had a Massey 1100 with no cab and I headed to work. Now I was never the sharpest kid and I am sure my Dad dreaded letting me do this but we couldn’t afford a hired man and we were already behind on the Spring work. So he explained what to do (I had driven the 1100 before so I wasn’t totally green.) and then he said make sure you have it in high multi power. So I get to the field and I think to myself ok I need to be in High gear and I start harrowing far too fast. I think this is odd but then I thought “Well Dad is in a hurry†and of course this was pre cell phone (at least for us.) So the first hill I go up I stall the tractor and as it’s stalling I am not grasping what is happening and before I can react I had backed the tractor over the harrow. I remember dreading driving over to the field where dad was seeding in our old 77 chev trying to figure out what I was going to tell him and so frustrated that I had lasted only 15 minutes before creating such a mess. He saw me coming and I am sure he knew I wasn’t coming with good news but he stopped and I explained and I’ll never forget what happened next, at the very least I expected him to be upset maybe not at me directly but certainly at the situation. He grinned and said sounds to me like you had it in high gear not high multipower. Well go grab the welder and some pieces and get it fixed. That was it, we went spent 3-4 hours and welded our mangle, he never complained or criticized me. I remember thinking I wanted to be like that when I have kids. He still helps me today at 73 and to be honest I worry about the day he isn’t here to go to for help or advice but thankfully that day is not today.Last edited by Grahamp; Aug 14, 2021, 12:20.

Yep, some dads should take lessons. Same thing happened when I rolled our 62 Chevy 1/2 T with a fuel tank in back middle of main street Sunday afternnon. The neighbour phones over for my dad to go see what his little darling has pulled off now. But not one word was said, the wreck was pulled out behind the shed and life continued on. Those were the days of $4000 gross income on our farm too with 6 hungry mouths to feed. I learned a lot from that guy- hope I passed it on to the next generation. Those were the days my friend - we thought they’d never end thanx Grahamps. 😂
