We never chopped a single acre this year while combining our forages, sold it to the cattle guys for the same price as last year and the past years.

    They all appreciated it.

We realize cow-calf guys are in a very tough position and now is not the time to gouge these guys.

Are you grain guys getting request from the ranchers for straw?

My scenario I am working with right now is worst case: No rain, no funding, snow hits Thanksgiving and stays. Just like 1961.
Have a cousin born in 1961 september 23, that day finished straight cutting wheat, dad said he was walking before the combine rolled again.

Don't they use 3-5 year averages to determine livestock numbers for most of these gov programs ? Should I book my space in front of the Post Office now to get a good spot or just keep scrounging for feed ?

For BSE ( $30/ cow) breeding herd was used for count. It was assumed that each cow had 1 calf at side. Same criteria for elk, deer, other.

It doesn’t matter how many cows I had 5 or 3 years ago, it dose mater how many cows I needed to pasture this summer and fall and feed this winter.

What are the checks and balances? How do they end up getting your female numbers? Trust?

Crop insurance will come and count some of the herds, back in mad cow days I know of a few guys that were a little less than truthful about cow numbers but I don’t think they got caught, I’m not sure cause I doubt they bragged about getting caught but they didn’t mind bragging about an over payment.

I think it’ll be mostly on trust.

Mad cow was almost 20 years ago, I think the government has a pretty good computer trail on most of us, even the farm fuel tax rebate could be used for tracking spending. If something doesn’t fit the norm I’d expect someone will come and count.

What if I bought six hundred ewes in may?

Lots if speculation on how it will be dished out.I even heard open heifers will be considered breeding females. After all the purpose is to keep females from going into feedlot to be slaughtered. My guess is crop insurance has access to agstability numbers and are local enough to be able to smell out the scammers.farmers will fill out a form on how many animals they declare then sign a form that will put them in jail if they are not truthful.

No problem, I’d expect someone will come and count, maybe not but I’m sure the government has an idea on what will trigger an audit, on the mad cow one nobody counted my cows but my dad that lives 300 kilometres east of me was kinda audited, someone came out to count but just looked and said close enough, was probably a few hundred head and nobody was really concerned if the numbers were exact but I’d expect some will count an exact number.
