Crop insurance will come and count some of the herds, back in mad cow days I know of a few guys that were a little less than truthful about cow numbers but I don’t think they got caught, I’m not sure cause I doubt they bragged about getting caught but they didn’t mind bragging about an over payment.

I think it’ll be mostly on trust.

Mad cow was almost 20 years ago, I think the government has a pretty good computer trail on most of us, even the farm fuel tax rebate could be used for tracking spending. If something doesn’t fit the norm I’d expect someone will come and count.

Lots if speculation on how it will be dished out.I even heard open heifers will be considered breeding females. After all the purpose is to keep females from going into feedlot to be slaughtered. My guess is crop insurance has access to agstability numbers and are local enough to be able to smell out the scammers.farmers will fill out a form on how many animals they declare then sign a form that will put them in jail if they are not truthful.

No problem, I’d expect someone will come and count, maybe not but I’m sure the government has an idea on what will trigger an audit, on the mad cow one nobody counted my cows but my dad that lives 300 kilometres east of me was kinda audited, someone came out to count but just looked and said close enough, was probably a few hundred head and nobody was really concerned if the numbers were exact but I’d expect some will count an exact number.

AFSC says # of breeding females as of August 6, 2021. My guess is mostly will be the honour system with a few audits.

Stats canada has the ag surveys and census, they could and should use that data as already done.....And farmers wouldn't mislead would they?

As far as counting ...good make work job...but just to get guy out to count is 400 bucks for the day plus mileage and expense...

Administration/ audits may well eat up some of the announced money.

I had an audit once maybe during BSE when they were giving loans to string you along.
Was still pen calving so you could see the pens were full standing in the driveway.
He was a cattle guy just trying to add some income.
We never counted as they were just trying to cut down on the fraud as he said some guys were dead broke and sold all the cattle but never paid the loans out.
Some bad deals at that time with feeders with no cattle and guys running out of feed and walking away and letting the cattle die.
                      Cull cows had no value.
