This week sure has taken a turn for the worse in my little corner of the world. We have gone from a little over 3 inches up till June 10 to just under 8 inches in the last week. One other fun thing that happened is I lost 4 quarters to hail at 100% its just stocks and the wheat got hit and knocked seeds out of the head at 30% on 4 quarters as well. A day later we still found hail around buildings yesterday afternoon. It did fill the burrow pit so the water supply for next year is back to spring levels.
So harvest stalled last Thursday when a slow-moving system hit and it rained Friday till Sunday night. Then Monday night a storm hit but the big one was Tuesday afternoon. Two inches of rain and hail made it look like winter.
Were at 15% done harvesting up to this point.
HRS most has been shut down and standing waiting for the weather to change for the harvest to resume or start for wheat. Downgrading will happen because were wet now.
Yields are lower than normal 42% of normal but it depends on the field and showers or snow cover or stubble height or just basically ****ing luck.
Peas are off and anywhere from 20 to 50 across the valley. Most were in the 30 range.
Lentils haven't heard a lot but the stand was nice but yields are down.
Barley is either standing, swath, or off in our area. Swath will have big problems now with sprouting and a thin swath will fall through the stubble. Haven't heard if it made malt ours is all in one big bin. The yield was half of normal but it's off.
Oats some swathing has happened and an odd guy shut them down but I don't know who would buy this. Swath fell through the stubble with the heavy rain so could be really bad.
Yields will be way down.
Durum yields are down but the price is up so if guys had it harvested before the rain it could be really good.
Canola no one has harvested yet any but the swaths look not bad from the road when you walk in small pods and lots and lots of blanks. We grew Trudeau lots of stock and **** all in it. Most are pod shatter but a good hail storm can take standing and swath it doesn't care. Neighbors are gone as bad as my standing. HAil isn't your friend. Lots of Canola has been shut down already or getting done. Were down to the last half of ours but we have 1200 acres that were seeded after the spring ice storm that is still green or just changing. The yield will be less than half normal for us. Big yields south of the valley will be average at best no bumpers here.
Pastures were done especially the hard grazed but there is some life coming back in some that were not used hard. Could be a great second cut on alfalfa but most don't look like they will attempt or the owners don't want it cut again.
Some water sloughs are back.
Rain total for the year is just under 8 inches now. I wanted 5 before freeze up and we got to that number. To bad this year's crop is ****ed but 2022 has a chance now even with a dry cold winter. Last year the rain ended in July and we didn't see any till spring 2021.
The best way to describe 2021 is it's ****ed.
Have a safe harvest talk to your neighbors were all in this together and oh **** Trudeau.
