P+H grader was happy today that it was dry canola and graded #1. No oil testing machine in the room and told me to bring it in .

Local cargill called today looking for wheat to replace a canola train they had to cancel due to low oil content. All the samples they had tested so far were below the sales spec. Mtgs happening this week to try to come up with a solution. Also all malt samples rejected due to very high protein.

Have had two samples of canola tested for oil at two different elevators and the result was between 40 and 41% both times. Some of the canola was from fields that were extremely drought stressed and yielded under 10. That stuff was blended with canola from the better field. The droughty canola has a reddish brown color while the good field was blacker in color.

Might be kinda hard on canola prices if all of a sudden they dont think we got any good stuff on the prairies.
Havent combined any yet, only the odd guy has, cereals mostly done so once it dries up again the canola will be next.

On a sort of canola related note, our area always ends up with a big amount of sub par canola. RP is pretty good to work with as they can use it at their Lethbridge crush plant. Pretty much anytime you are in the lineup there is trucks coming in to load canola for Lethbridge. (frustrating when I haul it north just so they can haul it past the mailbox heading south).
Anyhow last week they had 40 or 50 cars on the siding so I asked what the deal was and they were to load with canola to haul to Lethbridge but there was some debate if they were actually gonna fill them. Guy said they rail some once in a while but mostly truck it because truck freight is cheaper than rail freight. Can you believe that on a 400km haul it's cheaper to run a 100 truck loads than one train of 50 cars. Frickin insane
