Saskatchewan overtakes Alberta as province with worst rate of infection

COVID-19 in Sask.: Saskatchewan overtakes Alberta as province with worst rate of infection

    https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/saskatchewan/covid-19-in-sask-1.6168339

For the second day in a row, more people were diagnosed with COVID-19 than received a vaccination.

Saskatchewan reported 405 new cases of COVID-19 on Wednesday, two more deaths, and 27 more people in hospital, bringing the total to 181 patients.

Thirty-two of those people are in intensive care.

There have not been this many people hospitalized since April 29, during the peak of the third wave.

While case numbers skyrocket, only 393 more vaccines were administered on Tuesday.

On Tuesday there were 305 new cases and just 294 vaccines given.

So Saskatchewan is now a leader in something.

So when are Moe and his Merriman going to start paying attention and do something meaningful to reduce the impact of the 4th wave?

Are they going to wait for hospitals to run out of room and then decide that they should do something?

There are alot of people waiting for timely healthcare because Moe and his Merriman seem hellbent on letting the 4th wave of covid push us back into more restrictions and loss of life from causes other than covid, because the healthcare system can't deal with a large surge of unvaccinated individuals ending up in hospitals.

Former head of Sask. vaccine lab questions absence of chief medical health officer

Andy Potter wondering whether province ignoring advice from Dr. Saqib Shahab

The former head of the province's chief vaccine research lab is questioning what it would take for Saskatchewan's chief medical health officer to step down.

On Sunday, Andy Potter, former CEO of the Vaccine and Infectious Disease Organization-International Vaccine Centre (VIDO-InterVac), wrote a Twitter post asking questions about whether the provincial government is ignoring advice from Dr. Saqib Shahab and, if that was true, how long he intends to stay in the position.

"If one assumes that Dr Shahab has been providing valid medical advice to the Government and they have not acted on it, at what stage does integrity kick in and he resigns?" read the post.

"How many hospitalizations/deaths does it take? Serious question."

In an interview with CBC Radio's Saskatoon Morning, Potter said he was spurred to write the post after a letter was sent out by medical health officers in the province last week.

Among other requests, the health officers asked the Ministry of Health to implement mandatory vaccinations for all health-care workers and people wanting to enter non-essential businesses, as well as enforced masking in indoor spaces.

A couple of days ago in a tweet, Andy Potter asked: "should our chief medical health officer resign?" Host Leisha Grebinski speaks with Andy Potter, who is an expert in vaccine development, a professor at the U of S and the former head of VIDO-InterVac. 8:01

"There's been no public response to what was a very public letter," said Potter, who is currently a senior industrial research chair in vaccine development at the University of Saskatchewan.

"I think that one has to question whether Dr. Shahab agrees with the contents. If not, why not? And if so, why have there been no measures implemented?"

Potter says he's very concerned with the province's direction when it comes to COVID-19. On Tuesday, the province reported its seven-day average of new cases had reached 350 per day.

Potter says he is not suggesting that Shahab resign but is questioning the province's COVID-19 strategy and is concerned about current trends.

He said the provincial government needs to have a better immunization strategy, focusing on groups who still haven't been vaccinated.

Potter said there also needs to be much more testing done in the province as well as contact tracing. He pointed to Singapore, which sent COVID testing kits to every household in the country.

Ultimately, he said, Shahab needs to do a better job of showing a plan to people in Saskatchewan.

"Communication is key to leadership," he said.

"I think we need to see a little bit more communication coming out and not a press conference that's done grudgingly when people start complaining."

Only 294 vaccinations were given Monday. That's the lowest number since the province began offering vaccinations widely.

About 87 per cent of the new cases were in people who had not been fully vaccinate

Did Moe send you all the ear plug come masks?

No surprise there. Its obvious many of you stopped listening a long time ago.

When you start suggesting ivermectin is a treatment for the covid virus and vaccines don't work, its pretty obvious that it doesn't matter whether you listen or not. LOL

If the pandemic has demonstrated anything, it is that socialized medicine is in a state of collapse. Centrally planned systems are incapable of dealing with surges in demand, period.

The mass vaccination program is also in a stage of terminal failure. It was supposed to allow Canadians to return to a normal existence; there is nothing normal about the dystopian nightmare we are living in.

If anyone thought it was tough to get 70 or 80% of the population vaccinated twice, just consider what's going to happen when you order people to get a third, forth or fifth shot within a matter of months. Making it a condition of keeping your job is simply an admission of moral failure.

Historically, this is like the Vietnam era in America. It is 1967 and divisions over the conduct of the war are starting to get starker and protest is growing. The disintegration of the mass vaccination program will be the equivalent of the Tet Offensive.

The vaccines arent working wheel. They never did. Their effect was fleeting at best, 6 months of semi protection. Thats clear as day now.

Forcibly vaccinating to 100% with 100 of the same boosters wont change that and will only make it worse. The variants have been created by the very science that was supposed to stop the original strain. Now dozens of them are on the loose and we have nothing to counter them.

You will soon be joining the ranks of unvaxxed in a couple months.

Interesting that Vax helps, but is not the answer; Covid19 is a beast that will not go away...

From Reuters; The Delta variant produces more Covid19 in the noses of both vaxed and unvaxed...[people infected with Delta carry 1,260 times more virus in their noses compared with the original version of the coronavirus. Some U.S. research suggests that the viral load in vaccinated individuals who become infected with Delta is on par with those who are unvaccinated,...]

This is no laughing matter; to say the least...

                            "DELTA - STILL DOMINANT

The Delta variant first detected in India remains the most worrisome. It is striking unvaccinated populations in many countries and has proven capable of infecting a higher proportion of vaccinated people than its predecessors.

The WHO classifies Delta as a variant of concern, meaning it has been shown capable of increasing transmissibility, causing more severe disease or reducing the benefit of vaccines and treatments.

According to Shane Crotty, a virologist at the La Jolla Institute for Immunology in San Diego, Delta's "superpower" is its transmissibility. Chinese researchers found that people infected with Delta carry 1,260 times more virus in their noses compared with the original version of the coronavirus. Some U.S. research suggests that the viral load in vaccinated individuals who become infected with Delta is on par with those who are unvaccinated, but more research is needed.

While the original coronavirus took up to seven days to cause symptoms, Delta can cause symptoms two to three days faster, giving the immune system less time to respond and mount a defense.

                            LAMBDA – ON THE WANE

The Lambda variant had attracted attention as a potential new threat, but this version of the coronavirus, first identified in Peru in December, appears to be receding.

Although cases involving Lambda were rising in July, reports of this variant have been falling globally for the past four weeks, according to data by GISAID, a database that tracks SARS-CoV-2 variants.

The WHO classifies Lambda as a variant of interest, meaning it carries mutations suspected of causing a change in transmissibility or causing more severe disease, but it is still under investigation. Lab studies show it has mutations that resist vaccine-induced antibodies.

                            MU - ONE TO WATCH

Mu, the variant formerly known as B.1.621, was first identified in Colombia in January. On Aug. 30, the WHO designated it as a variant of interest due to several concerning mutations, and assigned a Greek letter name to it.

Mu carries key mutations, including E484K, N501Y and D614G, that have been linked with increased transmissibility and reduced immune protection.

According to the WHO's Bulletin published last week, Mu has caused some larger outbreaks in South America and Europe. While the number of genetic sequences identified as Mu have fallen below 0.1% globally, Mu represents 39% of variants sequenced in Colombia and 13% in Ecuador, places where its prevalence has "consistently increased," WHO reported.

The global health agency said it continues to monitor Mu for changes in South America, especially in areas where it is co-circulating with the Delta variant. Maria van Kerkhove, head of WHO's emerging diseases unit, said circulation of the variant is decreasing globally but needs to be observed closely. In a press briefing last week, White House chief medical advisor Dr. Anthony Fauci said U.S. officials are watching it, but so far Mu is not considered an immediate threat.

                            MORE ON THE WAY?

Getting more people vaccinated against COVID-19 is critical as large groups of unvaccinated people give the virus more opportunity to spread and mutate into new variants.

That effort must be stepped up internationally to keep variants from emerging unchecked among the populations of poor nations where very few people have been inoculated, experts say.

Even so, while the current vaccines prevent severe disease and death, they do not block infection. The virus is still capable of replicating in the nose, even among vaccinated people, who can then transmit the disease through tiny, aerosolized droplets.

To defeat SARS-CoV-2 will likely require a new generation of vaccines that also block transmission, according to Dr. Gregory Poland, a vaccine developer at the Mayo Clinic. Until then, Poland and other experts say, the world remains vulnerable to the rise of new coronavirus variants.

So what they appear to be saying is that the Chinese weaponized this one very well.

                              With Fauci's help.

Makes you wonder what other surprises they've got in their bag of tricks.
