Never Understand Canola

Combined on about a 24deg day. Binned at just over 20deg, 5% moisture, zero green count. Small bin.

One week later cables are reading 28deg. WTF. Moving it in the dark tonight.

Really only reason I grow canola is rotation and weed control, not a 50 bushel guy.

We run fans minimum 3 days in each bin after..
Then check Temps weekly..
Make sure under 20c...

Usually after 3 weeks in the swath canola quits sweating making it safer to bin. We also try to cool are bins down to 15 degrees as soon as possible and then will turn fans on later in the season to freeze depending on what moisture it was taken off at. All bins are monitored with bin sense.

Worst thing about straight cutting is that tiny teeny 50 ft greenish patch that's not worth going around in the middle of the field. OK now everybody fess up!!!!!!

On a year like this with practically worst drought in recent memory, canola coming off at half the usual moisture, low oil, standing ripe for nearly a month and rises 8 degs after a week in the bin?

Seems a little out there. I might have expected a couple degree rise.

But only been growing it for 10 yrs or so. Guess I havent seen everything.

My neighbors are all bagging this stuff and walking away.

Was changing batteries on the binsense other day, stuck my head over the 7% canola bin opening with fan on. Surprised me how steamy the air was for late afternoon. Ran it for 3 days, will run it again overnight in about a week. Then again in a month or so to cool it down to below 4c. Binned some 19% Durum, ran fan for 12days, pulled 45t. Checked multiple time 11% moisture. Alot cheaper than running a grain dryer. Cost estimate 10k bushels, 8kw 10hp fan, 12c kwh, about $1/h X 280hr = $280. 3 cents a Bushel cost plus some wear and tear on the fan.

Was wondering same thing , usually grain it 2-4 deg warmer than air temp .
But who knows this year has had lots of strange things .

We were combining lentils on a plus 30 degree day. The grain was 40C.

Even the coldest days the grain is hotter than air temperature.

Even alittle green plant material can create problems.

It's been rushed days but the temp of the test samples we ran was 21-22deg. I seem to remember that day getting to about 24deg. We have had some cool mornings so who knows. Maybe some hotter stuff came in later.

If it's just binned a bit on the warm side we can deal with that but if this is actually sweating up that much in only a week could be a problem.

Just a STO, but we test and record MT, temp of sample, time of day for every load.

Then Temp cables to verify a cooling. Fans for a few NIGHTS to remove sweat.

Grain always 2-8C warmer, especially hot dry days. Saw 36C barley at 11% MT, cooled that too.

What we have experienced over the last several years is anything we swath we have no issues, its the straight cut we had some issues with.

Slightly off topic but I can’t read the cables on three bins in the yard where the cell service is blocked. The rest of the bins have poor cell service and the App really struggles and crashes constantly trying to get a reading but is usually successful if you waste enough time. It is frustrating beyond belief. I just want to plug in, read the cable temps, and move on, not sync all the data every time. I don’t need the ‘extras’. Just read the cable and show me the temperatures.

Agreed the new web software sucks too. I checked and have 5 broken antennas, Trying to get replacements has been lame so far. I'm fine with a cable to plug into, I'm sick of having bins not transmitting. Hunting for new receivers, lithium AA's , antennas is it really a time saver?
