Well, late last night we made the final three swipes my sons beside me in the other two combines. I am starting to enjoy this farming with my boys more and more every day. It's nice to end the harvest with 12 good fields.
So here it is.
Harvest is 97% done in our area basically nothing all way to Regina except the guy who seeded his crop around the 20th of June. Our organic guy has green flax and the green feed that was seeded around the first of July is getting knocked down.
HRS most will grade in the top two grades and yields are about half normal. Few higher and few lower. Rain makes grain and mud is still a dud.
Durum is the same except grade the rain in July took it lower but the yield is half normal.
Barley will grade either malt or feed and yield is half normal.
Oats are similar but guys who took without waiting have green in the sample. below half.
Flax 17 to 22 is all she wrote the organic maybe 1 to 4 I would go closer to 1 discing in spring dried down the ground too much.
Peas and lentils, peas did worse at about half normal, lentils a little better than half. Later ones didn't do well in August rain.
Canola most are in the 20 to 40 range depending on rain, if you caught a shower you knew as soon as you started harvesting, and low areas that flooded in mud years that were worked last fall that guys seeded in our area in spring lets just say brought tears to your eyes how it poured in. So yield below half normal. More damage to the 2021 crop came from extreme heat at flowering and not from a shortage of water in our area. Canola doesn't like days over 28 and we had lots.
Cow guys are hauling bales and sorting and selling. Pastures greened up from 5 inches of rain in August. Most should not need to liquidate to get through the winter. Lots dropped straw to help out. Why not we need cowboys and hogs and chickens to get rid of feed grain, use your ****ing head.
Rainfall for the year is 8 inches now but sept has turned into a very dry month. We had 3 inches from April till June and then the 1/10 or 1/10 started till August 5 inches. The ground has moisture better than last fall but I still would like another 2 to three inches before the snow flys to set the stage for some luck in 2022. Jewish holidays have given zero rain in Sept, ok 3/10 but compared to normal that is a lot less than we normally get.
So here is to hope October is a wet ****ing month.
Guys are starting to work on land to get it ready for 2022 like here comes the disc, protill, lemkin, degelman heavy harrow and new disc harrow, plus the kelly. Yes funny thing my worked ground from fall of 2020 was some of our highest yielding wheat in 2021. Go figure.
Soil tests start next week.
Pig shit starts next week.
Custom harvest starts next week.
**** me next week will be busy.
Cat work starts in three.
Have a great time go help the neighbor who is still harvesting and let's get this thing done.
Be safe.
