I went to buy a fuel cap from Pattison Ag. The total was $330 CDN. I said fat chance Jimmy and walked out.
I spent a little time online looking at comparable US dealer prices. $84USD
free shipping in the USA. Unfortunately they were unable to ship out of country due to agreements with John Deere Corp.
I understand this from a contractual agreement between a company and dealer network but it just seems like this falls under anticompetitive practice and really we farmers should be filing complaints to the Canadian competition authorities.
This needs to change!

I often get parts sent to Havre and make a trip to pick them up and drive them across. Of course it needs to be enough $ to make it worthwhile.
John Deere header parts, some combine parts, some tractor parts. When we switched over to three in. I saved $10,000 by getting a couple pallets shipped to Havre.

How can they even begin to justify that? It defies all logic and sense. Shameless...
Doesn't pay a partsman to look it up, and select it for you.
Doesn't pay someone to itemize every single instance of where that bolt is used across thousands of pieces of equipment, with serial number breaks and updates.
Hasn't been stocking it for potentially years at various levels of warehouses and distributing it in small quantities all over the world.
Isn't required by law to keep every bolt and screw etc. available for so many years regardless of demand.

You can't call the fastener shop and tell them you need two of the bolts that connect the thingamajig to the whatchamacallit for this machine with this serial number.
You probably used the services of the agco parts department to learn the size and length and pitch and grade and head type and quantity of the bolt, before you could take those specifications to the hardware store.
A bolt is obviously a poor example. And that markup is insane. But not as insane as it might look at first glance when you consider all of the costs involved in having it on the shelf.
A better example, a few years ago a poster here was complaining about the price of a wiring harness for a 40 year old John Deere tractor.
Instead of being grateful that it was even still available which it almost certainly wouldn't have been from any other manufacturer.
That wiring harness either had been sitting on a shelf costing interest and storage and accounting costs for 40 years. Or it was custom-made in a very small quantity more recently removing all economies of scale.

You're both right. And it's always paid to watch. I don't want money in inventory any more than they do. And with quality in the tank, I want my warranty.
Just like shopping anywhere, different pricing schemes can catch you. Standard bolts through the factory always a hit.
Oil and filters have become a watch for sure.
Some dealership networks different pricing structure. Some parts managers padding their bonus. Check your freight charge for example.
