Railways have short memories of all the land and mineral rights they received. Maybe they should be taxed by the mile.

The right thing to do would be to re-nationalize the railways , settle all the pending " so called contracts" and start over.


They completely phucked up in 2013 , wouldn't pay a dime in penalties and the government ignored the harm to farmers much the same as today....and now this 380 million dollar claim.

The land should have reverted to the crown in return for rail rates. Unfortunately there was no one willing to fight the railways. The railbeds should be run by a crown corporation which would allocate running rights to all rail companies. May the most efficient survive.

If they aren’t supposed to be paying taxes then they shouldn’t have to pay taxes, if they agree to a 15% freight reduction IN PERPETUITY they should have to provide a 15% freight reduction in perpetuity. If it makes them go broke or the tax break hurts the government more then they thought too bad.

We are light years ahead in railroading in Canada than where we were at 20 years ago, some of the most efficient service anywhere on the planet.

I for one am glad that CDN railways have kept us up and running through Covid, and done it efficiently.

Credit where credit is due, Hunter Harrison was a grumpy greasy stingy RR manager, he did bring about massive efficiency gains in railroading in North America. We can be thankful that Quebec and PM JT are not in charge of our RR in Canada!!!
