Hearing now that Dekalb seed for this coming spring, is going to be sold by seed size, as the Invigors were last year.

Only canola bags I have in my shop are the sample bags from 2018 .. the last time I grew it.
Which reminds maybe i should take them in and sell them, could buy some Christmas gifts some spiced rum for New Years.
How does anyone justify seeding canola next year with fert where it is??
          WOW!!!!!
Actually .. how does anyone justify seeding anything???

So, does the industry have a contingency plan for this type of event? Seedi g half the acres doesn't sound like a good option for the future of our industry.
If there is only enough seed for half the acres, would we be legally permitted to bulk up our orders with brown bag seed?
Has anyone ever taken a volunteer canola crop to harvest? Do the hybrid traits carry through the second generation? Will we be encouraged to seed 2 lbs or less per acre?
Will South American supplies come through?

lots were BB here over the years , good for bug spray sales , and sprayer hours
you think these seed treatments don't work , try it without
no problem with genetics though , grows well , and handles chemical well , just be ready to live in sprayer

Last few years I have terminated volunteer canola crops in my lentils that look like they would have made more money than the lentils. Maybe I should let one go some year and see what I get.

I dont think its against patent to harvest volunteer growth.

I was assuming that if it came down to allowing farm raised seed to be used, that we could still buy the latest and greatest seed treatments and apply them to the proper legal channels
There has to be a reason why so much effort is put into hybrid seed production. There has to be some yield or treat penalty to growing second generation seed, or else that would be the standard model wouldn't it?

Guessing it's not the bottom 1/3 of potential you're giving up but the top 1/3.
I need that top 1/3 here.
If your fixed costs are so low you don't need the top third, you really should be going full throttle anyway.

If you take a volunteer crop to harvest, Bayer or BASF or whoever owns the patent still say you owe them their tech fee then and may come a calling. Fawking Pirates

Of course, I'm thinking of the scenario where there just plain isn't enough seed available, and seeding our own is the only option, personally I would rather pay the tech fee, or at least a portion of it to be able to seed at all, rather than go without. If we go two years in a row with drastically lower exportable canola, the first time due to drought, the second time due to a seed shortage, we will lose some of these markets for good.
