I would argue that this year it is probably in all our best interests to share this info with the industry.
Given the pace of deliveries so far, and roughly half a crop, at some point there won't be enough grain left to buy to fill a train in the entire originating area of the elevator.
They need to know if it is worth ordering another train, or call it quits for the season instead of taking a chance on only sourcing half a train load and paying the penalties or full freight costs.

That point may not be soon, but it will occur. I don't want to be the one sitting with bins full when this happens.

This year it’ll be a huge gamble sitting on grain if it decides to rain. I’ll be looking for opportunities in the next few months, maybe gambling a bit on a dry spring which to me has poor odds. Looking back I’d say less than 1 in 10 for sure, maybe a bit better odds coming off a dry year though.
What is going to happen with feed grains by summer? There won't be enough to go around, corn will have to keep coming to fill the gaps, but given the extra costs of freighting it up here, and the time and logistics involved, will anyone be willing to originate a train load at the bitter end before harvest, and risk being stuck with it trying to compete with much cheaper grain right off the combine if harvest is early and yields improved? Could be a gap in supply with huge opportunities, or it could be a glut of imported grain and early harvested hitting the market at the same time.
Keeping in mind that we nearly ran out last summer coming off a decent 2020 harvest.

We had a heavy fog a few nights ago and it was very frosty the next morning till almost noon.
You could plainly see the level of grain in the FEW bins that still had any left in them.
I did not take an exact count but bins in most rows around here are 75% empty, 20% under 1/3 full and 5% still 90 to 100% full.
No grain bags and many guys hauled every bushel of new crop direct to the elevator off the combine.
So i am thinking most of the grain left is either seed, or waiting for even higher prices in the new year??

As Partners stated, I got a crop ins payment also. Most would starve off the amount of grain in the bin on my farm. Took the profit I could and ran. Felt I could get some upside by investing the leftover proceeds after Fertilizer took its share in a few stocks. So far I am ahead by more than I would be if I held the grain till now plus covered off inflation for a year

Whenever crop insurance shows up to knock on my bins there’s more empty than full ones here. Nothing has been sold yet and there’s carryover barley from last year since we didn’t grow enough this year to keep the MooMoos happy this winter.

On a positive note………. The trucking bill will be pretty minuscule this year…………🍀

I'd be more inclined to use that expression on previous years of carry over than 2021 crop.
