    Volvo Trucks North America continues to lead in the deployment of sustainable Class 8 zero-tailpipe emission vehicles for the North American trucking industry with ongoing deliveries of its Volvo VNR Electric model to fleets across the country. The company announced that production of the enhanced Volvo VNR Electric model will begin in Q2 2022 and features an up to 85% increased range, faster charging, and even more configurations for heavy-duty transport.

    Volvo Trucks first began taking customer orders for its first Volvo VNR Electric model in December 2020, with commercial production starting in Q2 2021 at the company’s New River Valley manufacturing plant in Dublin, Virginia. Over the past year, Volvo Trucks has delivered the Volvo VNR Electric to customers in several states across the US, collecting valuable operating data to continually improve the technology to increase the efficiency of the truck under varying operating conditions. The next-generation Volvo VNR Electric is now open for order.

    The enhanced Volvo VNR Electric features significant improvements in the battery: technology, design, management, and package offering.

    Improvements in battery design have resulted in an up to 40% increase in storage capacity for each battery.

    A dedicated Battery Thermal Management System (BTMS) was added to manage and maintain ideal environmental temperatures.

    Volvo Trucks has also introduced a new six-battery package option.

    Combining all three results in an increased energy storage of up to 565kWh and offers an operational range of up to 275 miles. Regenerative braking energy is captured and fed back into the system to maximize energy efficiency and driving range.

    The enhanced Volvo VNR Electric also reduces the required charging time, as the state-of-the-art 250kW charging capability provides an 80% charge in 90 minutes for the six-battery package and 60 minutes for the four-battery version.

    Volvo Trucks also has added two new configurations to its VNR Electric lineup—a 6x4 straight truck and a 6x4 tractor—joining its three existing models: 4x2 tractor, 6x2 tractor, and single-axle straight truck. Each Volvo VNR Electric configuration is designed for applications and drive cycles with local and regional distribution ranges, including food and beverage, drayage, and pick-up and delivery routes."

      But I'm not seeing anything recently newsworthy or any breakthroughs about the battery technology in question. Just the usual limitations it has faced all along. Can you point me in the right direction.

          Thank you Tweety and big wheel. I had tracked the stories down.

          I really really want to be proven wrong in my doubt about battery technology progressing enough to make intermittents economical.

          Will keep watching this one and see what comes of it.

            Yamaha Motor will supply Subaru Tecnica International Inc. (STI) with hyper-EV electric motor units (earlier post) for the STI E-RA EV the company is developing for future motorsport.

            The STI E-RA is being developed by STI with the aim of gaining experience and practice in new technologies in the world of motorsport, which is making its way toward a carbon-neutral era. The STI E-RA CONCEPT it is based on was on display at the Subaru/STI booth at the Tokyo Auto Salon 2022.

            The units the vehicle will use were developed to be “emotional electric engines” that leverage the technologies and engineering sense garnered via engine development to date. Further, thanks to Yamaha’s casting and machining technologies accrued through developing engines, the adoption of high-efficiency segment conductors, and more, these units achieve high output while being compact in size.

            In July 2021, the company reviewed the Yamaha Motor Group Environmental Plan 2050 originally formulated in 2018 and set a new goal of aiming for carbon neutrality throughout all of its business activities—including across the life cycles of its products—by 2050. Among these changes, Yamaha Motor set a goal of reducing Scope 3 CO2 emissions (emissions produced from the company’s value chain, e.g., use of sold products) by 90% by 2050 compared to 2010. The commissioned development of prototype electric motors is one of the company’s initiatives toward achieving this goal.

            The impression of the overall design seems to include an axial-flux motor and respective gearing with an inverter. That is an excellent start.

            So there'll soon be no credible excuses for not having electric race cars competing in the same race series as combustion vehicles - merging Formula One and Formula E for instance. Simply combine this Yamaha motor - or BMW's recently reported rare-earth-free EV motor - with the latest ultra-energy-dense batteries - and incorporate rapid(sub-2 minute) pit-stop battery-swapping - Nio-style.
            Maybe add some SOA turbo-boosting supercaps to ensure EVs win almost every race !

            I can envision adding an electric powerpac [motor with invertor/generator] , add into the driveshaft system of our class 8 trucks, with a decent battery...

            This would significantly decrease fuel consumption, extend brake life exponentially; especially with computer GPS preplanned driver control regen/ recycling of vehicle energy... retrofitting older class 8 trucks into hybrid EV systems.

            150hp electrical motor supplement...especially on flatland transport after highway speed achieved... could easily be achieved to reduce fuel consumption.
