National media has just been advised Justin Trudeau will hold a virtual news conference from an undisclosed location at 11:00AM EST today. Media has also been summoned to Rideau Hall where the Governor General will be speaking shortly after 11:00PM. There is an embargo on all further information until 11:00PM.
So is Trudeau resigning and calling a snap election? If so, by election laws if the election is called this AM it would have to be held no less than 36 days of dropping the writ, and no more than 50 days out. We would have a early March election.
Is this a calculated risk by Trudeau that opposition parties are not ready for an election? Does Trudeau believe more people agree with vaccination mandates that what yesterday's rally show? Regardless, if parliament is dissolved today, there will be no changes to mandates until after an election. Leaves lots of questions about candidates in ridings, and even leadership of the Conservative party. Appears O'Toole will be leading the party in another election. It also brings into question the funds collected by the organizers of the rally and if they are political donations. As well, will the signs on trucks be considered political advertising. So it appears freedom convey/anti Trudeau faction has achieved their goal, the question will be are they organized enough to fight an election or if they have angered enough people that the Liberals could win a majority.
