Fire permit a must here. Entails contacting local chief so he knows.
Otherwise you pay for the callout.
And since cell phones arrived the department gets called numerous times per smoke. Times sure changed
Then of course, depending on location, the county sheriff can still yank it if he sees fit. I would hate to have to burn any where near a highway. I'd be a nervous wreck.

Fire permits remind me of first time we found out about fire permits. We were cleaning up the yard one fall. Had an old chop bin to burn. I thought I heard something about fire permits and informed my father but he said something along the lines of …. Anyway he lights it up and in the meantime a plane flies over and circles. I tell dad I bet he reports it. Dad says ….. and in 30 minutes we hear fire engines. Anyway plane radioed PA fire centre. They call our local FD which says it’s probably nothing but other FD in neighbouring RM takes the call cause they’re a bunch overly eager cowboys. They show up after it’s done burning. Fire chief says he could charge us for no permit but he’s out of his jurisdiction anyway and leaves. Funny situation and now I phone for permits.

There is an old farm saying that applies to this thread "If you throw a stone and you hear a pig squeal, you know you hit one"
