Even without war in ukraine, and Russia being taken offline, there was going to be shortages. Just due to the supply chain problems that already existed. Personally, I am ignoring the market gyrations around every potential peace deal.

Just like President Putin said he would Not attack Ukraine… Putin has no track record of getting us to trust any withdrawals from Northern Ukraine…

The numerous reports of the Ukrainian Peace negotiators were being exposed/poisoned March 4th… should indicate just how seriously President Putin takes the Ukrainian negotiating attempts.

China has taken food security quite seriously long before covid and supply chain issues arose, let alone warring amongst trading partners. The clean plate campaign and resulting legislation meant that food waste reduction could feed 30-50 million people. Poof, there goes the measly imports from Canada

Not quite sure what you're saying as China will always rely on imports as long as food is conventionally grown.
But you are right. Food security has been front and center in all their planning for a very long time.

On paper, I can see it happening. But physically, my understanding is that the infrastructure to get product from Russia into China is already maxed out. We really aren't very good at visualizing just how fast the distance is between the grain growing regions of russia, and the consumption areas of China, and the ports. And the geographic barriers and the political barriers etc. The same applies to oil and natural gas.
I don't know anything about the legalities of China buying grain and then exporting it directly from Russian courts pretending it is their own. But it appears that those reports are all but out of commission with ships unable or unwilling to access them.

Russia consumes 75 million tonnes of wheat per year. Production is variable from year to year but has been becoming more consistent with better practices and western interests and investment. With Russia shut out you can imagine a lot of western influence will not be there. Farming methods in the Soviet era ensured food shortages as their top agricultural scientist was a complete quack. Even today he is treated with some regard in Russian ag which is a travesty. He was the Joseph Mengele of ag science.
