Friday Crop Report on a Thursday!

First double digit high since October is slated for May 4th. Should be able to drive out on the lakes and fish on season opener. I’m renting a bobcat to clear snow so we can get the sheep to the barn for lambing. Clearing alleyways and gates etc. At least the tops of some of the gates are visible now, so I don’t have to guess where to dig. Might take the kids skidooing up to the hunting spot for a wiener roast in the bush tomorrow. I find it is important to take pics under all circumstances. But especially in these strange ones so as to remember dates. Wife and I a year ago on April 8th were watching the sheep out on the field, no snow in site. I would not have known the date offhand. Take pictures folks! And then you can ask chuck, why? Why chuck? Lol

interesting , will the liquid phos just dribble from the blue pipes behind opener ? i also use liquid but not for the phos , that is dry and goes down with the seed , but i would like to go all liquid , i have bourgault openers that are suposed put the 28-0-0 about an inch and a half to the side , works realy good on wheat , do you also seed your conola one pass with that setup ? i have been a bit scared to put 100 lbs N and the sulphur that near the seed , also i dont think the fert is put deep enough seeding conola that way , so i band all the N and sulphur before seeding

Once we get these all set up I will post a few pictures.
There will be a blue liquid phos line in each seed row . They have orffices and pressured for a steady stream.
We do use it for canola once in while if needed , but the majority of canola is done with planter .
We use Alpine G22 for the liquid phos , also can add dry phos through seed rows .

Just sitting in the office and found grain samples from 2002. We froze first few days of August that year it was below 0 from 10 o’clock at night till 9 the next morning totally screwed the crop. It would have been one of the largest we have ever grown.

Durum after it was cleaned the screenings we burnt

Wheat moved to Manitoba and mixed with fuz wheat so could sell.

Then the weather did the same thing in 2004 with a frost in early august.


Crop insurance measures but we had volume of light shit.

i always keep a bin of wheat in case their is a disaster like that , recently cleaned 2020 wheat to plant this year

We do similar but funny thing the frost year wheat germinated like a fool and so we cleaned up some 20000 bushels that we used for seed for 2003 and 2004 years but then were hit with frost in 2004 again that was a rough year. Cleaning Starbucks from last year will do 10000 bushels and have 5000 of Brandon and 5000 of Alida just in case.

We got hit hard as well in those years with frost after the bad droughts of 2001 and 2002
That was a bad 5 years for this area.
This past 5 have not been great either capped off by last years drought . There are other areas not far from here in tougher shape .
This year will be pivotal in many areas , more so than back then . These high prices are like a nightmare for some because the only 100% guaranteed thing is double or triple the expenses

Hopefully areas that have been felt a tough hand the past few years actually get a decent crop , or it will be devastating.

that looks a neat setup , so the seed goes in two rows with the N deeper in the middle ? what spacing is your drill ? is that shank mounted packers i see too ? sorry for all the questions !

The shank mounted packers were fairly popular 20 years ago . Kinda old school but it works great for cereals, peas and canola if need be just have to go slow.
We like the liquid phos set up , allows us to put micros , innoculant and other in furrow liquid nutrient additives very effectively.
Products like Crop Aid , lingo hummates , and N fixing products like Envita ….

Will be testing this in with Alpine . These types of biologicals are hopefully going to act like rhizobia in pulses . Alpine works great as a carrier due to very low salt content.
Time will tell how effective on cereals and canola .

Used the Envita last year on a few fields and results were promising for how dry it was. Will be doing more this year.
