Just read Drew's latest prognosticator... FML! It's evident from his constant defences of past prognostications that he's getting some serious blowback from guys in the dry zone.

If the pattern doesn't break in a significant manner until late June, or god forbid JULY, it is going to make a shit situation WORSE!

Regardless of seeding date, this crop will be DONE!!! if it doesnt see something significant in the next 10 days. My worst fear is a failed crop that then sees surplus moisture in July and August! If we do by chance manage to scratch together enough moisture to nurse a pathetic crop to the supposed July "rain train" (I notice his last two prognosticators have not mentioned those words... all that will be left is a thin, measly crop. It will not provide competition to weeds, and best case scenario a dessication of every acre will be necessary. Worst case is a dessication still required and a cool damp august into possibly september which means we all harvest a pathetic crop of garbage quality.

Im grumpy if you couldn't tell, and this sure as hell didn't make things any better. Hopefully weed bales have a value come fall, because that might be all we muster up.

Considering how he shit the bed this spring with regards to my area, I'm not so sure it's worth the paper i printed it out on.

He provided hope, to guys that are by nature always hoping that things will turn around. There is "hope" for your area as well... Is it worth considering? Possibly. But then one can always hope that things will turn around.

It's always darkest just before the dawn...

There's always light at the end of a tunnel...

        Nothing lasts forever...

        etc...

Scouted most everything tonight. So report is as follows.

As far as a soil penetrometer is an indication of soil moisture, it would appear that I have at best 12" of dampish soil, and in some places 0-3. In most fields I would still be incapable of pulling a complete soil core to 12".

Peas are 1-3 nodes, and absolutely polluted with russian thistle. Not entirely sure how to approach this one. Blow basagran early and come back with viper in a week? Blow viper now?

Durum is anywhere from 2 leaf to just poking the surface. Anything seeded before the magical 1/2" rain seems to be doing ok for the time being with minimal weed pressure. The later seeded stuff, post 1/2" is doing ok on heavier dirt, but there is a high degree of seedling mortality on lighter soil. It was seeded into moisture, but soon after germination it appears that the seedbed dried out, and anywhere from 15-30% has died. We'll see how it goes from here, but if rain doesnt show up soon, I see no point in drilling additional durum into those spots.

Mustard, which was seeded last is anywhere from just poking the surface to stranded in dry dirt. Estimate 15-20% is waiting for a rain to germinate. In those places where it's stranded in dry dirt, there is nothing I could have done different... I was already pushing the limit at 2" seeding depth anyway.

Native prairie is cooking in most places except where the meager amount of snow layed, and hayland is likely not going to produce much of anything. Alfalfa is dropping leaves well before flowering already, and just over ones ankle bone.

By and large it's worse than it looks from the road. It was 80*f and 18% humidity here today... Much more of this and It'll be over.

Up and away on to seed another day.

Hit that point where I wish I was done then look around and every single neighbor is still going. One Big dog across the valley just finished. So if I'm done in three more days that's not bad.

Have a great day every one it's a glorious sunrise.
