Just received my January natural gas bill, was still charged $6.34 a gigajoule for natural gas. Was quite astonished as no doubt the AECO spot price of natural gas was much lower than that in January. Emailed my natural gas supplier, still waiting for a reasonable explanation. February price is supposed to be $3.44 a gigajoule. Checked diesel prices around Alberta online this morning. Three hills $179.9, Edmonton $1.529, Grande Prairie $1.969. No deflation in diesel yet. WTI oil recovered some this week, up over $78. Life still not getting cheaper in the real world Errol.

Realize many agrivillers do not agree, but global commodity deflation has not just taken hold, but now accelerating.
Global urea and ammonia prices remain under heavy pressure on poor buyer demand. Coal prices take heavy hit, lumber prices fall back 15% this week. Ethanol and biodiesel price pressure. Even coffee prices dropping. Nat gas near all-time lows. Gasoline and diesel in-decline. Ocean freight rates have been slammed.
There’s not much inflation in the base commodity world. But there are massive margins built in-between from wholesale to retail.
Incoming consumer meltdown will eventually solve retail inflation. My opinion . . . .

Everyone needs an EV.
Start with used like this one to cheapen it up.
+ taxes and luxury tax
Much cheaper to drive **
I wonder what those used trucks will be worth 5-7 years down the road when they need a full battery replacement?
Would have to nearly give it away if it costs $30,000 or so for a new battery system? Or can they be upgraded reasonably?
I guess time will tell .
That same F150 new , 2022 , can be bought for $40,000 less . Low $60’s without dealing much
You can buy o lot of fuel for $40,000

Think its going to take a while yet to cool things off. 130 k new jobs in Jan when normal times would be layoffs a few thousand after Christmas rush. Pissing match between Wally World and suppliers over price now even with some lower freight costs. Government employees looking for big wage increases to cover cost of living high int rates this stuff feeds on its self . Old school buddy says toy sales ( Sleds and ATV's ) still strong can't keep them on the lot. And he's not easy to deal with ! It took longer in the 80's than everyone planned for but when deflation happened it was a shitstorm .

One interesting thing I was told recently is that the under 30 crowd before Covid was 30 % of the vehicle sales . The past 4 months that is below 5 % now

Auto industry in big trouble, they just don’t know it yet. If not this year, ‘24 and ‘25, the industry at-risk of shuttered dealerships and restructuring. Just wait for the cries-for-bailouts . . . .

Nobody needs to buy commodities as an inflation hedge when there is no inflation. Best investment available right now: 4.75% GIC. www.eqbank.ca We have to keep in mind that central banks exist for the suppression of interest rates below market values. Therefore they never raise rates, they just suppress less which causes them to rise towards the free market level. With excess debt that is out there right now, free market rates would be 8 -10%.
