Less Competition

I admit we don't have anybody like this real close to me so I haven't had to compete against an outfit like this for land. Eventually the cost of the land has to be paid for, a crop planted and taken off. Over the last 150 years there has been large operations out there both grain and cattle in the great plains in the US and Canada. Most of them don't last for various issues. I know of lots of guys that feel threatened by those farms cause maybe they think it they are competing with them but as others said a lot of these guys are taking a hell of a risk. I guess I feel slow and steady will finish the race. I am most concerned that I may not recognize an opportunity when it presents itself. Most of the best land purchases our farm has made over the past 25 years are when people thought the worst of farming.

Around the turn of the last century there were some massive spreads by even todays standards. Locally a man from Scotland came with a large inheritance with stipulation he build a church and hospital in our town. The farm he set up was massive with multiple large hip roof barns which were filled with all kinds of purebred stock. Namely Clydesdales and Aryshire cattle. Even a steam tractor for plowing the virgin soil. Employed dozens of men and women. It worked for a while and was famous for its purebred stock all over North America. Things changed though. Demand for work horses disappeared, demand for aryshire cattle likewise. As well, wheat would freeze often enough that they lost their ass on it. When the markets crashed that about ended it.

When you go from 30k acres to 340k acres in a few short years are you the same as the guy at the craps table that lets it all ride.
I don't know and don't say they are wrong as I have no idea and appears to be cant loose at this stage.
Does crap insurance not limt top end coverage at a small fraction of this?

Maybe made $200 an acre last 4 yrs?
