So, in response to the thread title, it appears to be just weather. Not unprecedented, not unusual, not worse than before. Still tragic.
AF5. Good research on Pakistan floods. You are right that the country has always had disastrous floods. However your analysis ignores any flood mitigation that Pakistan has done in the last 75 years. If they have done nothing you may be right that floods are not as bad. If however they have built control structures, dredged rivers, and built up embankments and floods are just as bad then your conclusion is faulty. So sis you look at flood mitigation done or just jump to your conclusion because it fit your bias?

What was the population in those corresponding years ?

Always gets more “catastrophic” as population increases .
Just like the dollar value they try to hype up in hurricane hit areas …. Well duh , everything is 10x in value from 25-30 years ago , as well as population density

Your right. Another factor to consider before you can make the bold statement that floods are not as bad as they once were. However, economic losses are not the only measure of flood that AF5 shared. Comparing the acres flooded is another measure that has nothing to due with increase in population and this year's flood as put a significant portion of the country underwater, more so that in many previous floods. and inspite of mitigation factors including the construction of over 6000 kms of built up embankments.

It is easy to live in the past and use the excuse that it has happened before therefore nothing to see here. However, that is the easy way out. Instead we have to look to the future and weigh the risks of possibilites. Hail storms have always happened so do farmers in hail alleys ignore the risk, or try to protect their investments with hail insurance.

Is the dropping of Lake mead, aral sea, Ogallala aqrifer simply due to to much irrigation use or is it a combination of high use and decreasing recharge? There are 2 sides to every ledger and too many people only look at one.

Headlines are intended to draw readers not inform. Articles have to be read to get actual facts and information but in this clickbait era too many people never get past the headline and that is obvious by Biglentils post.
