had a close call today
we blow combines off faithfully every morning and do a good job
somehow today something hot musta fell off turbo
we were done field getting ready to move to next field
all of a sudden in the far corner where we had finished 5 mins before stubble was on fire and moving fast
disc and water truck were still in the field
i think it took 7 or 8 minutes to get tractor and disc running and to the fire
it was under control within ten minutes, my point is , you don't have 15 or 20 minutes to go get it somewhere else
no crop loss , injuries or machine loss because we were ready for once
its scary shit guys , we were 33 here today with a strong south wind
no room for error
a friend said 3 combines burnt in his area today northwest of here
one burnt here a couple days ago
she's tinder dry here in the swamp
don't take chances, get what you need in the field , no excuses , fire dept can't help you
you need water to put combine out , disc to put stubble or crop out , cultivator NFG cause you might be in standing crop
oh , and blacken a fire guard around grain bags
that was scary seeing that hot bitch heading for grain bag plus 2 combines, grain cart , grain bagger, 2 semis , half tons, service truck, 2 tractors , water truck , etc
your own crop is not covered on your public liability, only the neighbours
incidentally , apparently hail ins covers you for fire , who knew?
