    Malt Barley

Have been growing Copeland forever and would like to try something newer. I have narrowed it down to Synergy and Connect, which one is better? I am in East Central Sask and looking for input.

Been growing Synergy for 4 yrs.
    100% malt acceptance.
    Yields way better than Copeland.
Connect seems close with better standability.
Fraser sounds good but local viterra and RP say limited yet..
We average close to 100 b/a this yr..
80 lbs N 10 lb potash as per soil tests..

Perfect I will definitely have no regrets putting Copeland to rest.

Word on the line is Rahr says they’re done with Synergy after this year.

If you ever believe what Rahr says 😂

Not very far from Rahr. I tried growing malt for about 5 years. Unfortunately during this time we had less than ideal falls. Besides the only time Rahr would consider buying my grain was when their regular growers were short. In the end I concluded it was an absolute waste of time. I have grown Synergy, I don’t know about acceptance, but much better to grow than Copeland. Yields and stands better. Sirish feed barley stands better than Synergy and outyielded it by 15-20% this year.

In this area Fd usually 50-70 cents less than west Sk and AB. We have had 2 excellent harvests in a row.
$9.30 malt equals $22 canola and $13 wheat for our yields.
Canola and wheat beat Fd prices.
                  Costs are lower, storage/trucking higher.

Seems like around here feed always outyields malt

Getting malt for me was simply an aggressive proactive approach.
But the spread would have to triple.
I've said it before. A highly overproduced specialty crop.
Unhedge-able for either party as well.
Growing a little feed next year for a max bushel learning experience.
I'm in the bushel business not the storage business.

$1.27 price difference between malt and fd at both local plants now..
So at $18 canola, how many acres will go elsewhere?

Any hope for Oats? $4.50 is poorest paying crop.

Only if you and a few others don’t grow it next year.
