Looks and feels like just a regular winter here. About a month of of snow and cold with very little melting.
Ground was warm when the first snow came and that snow insulated the ground really good holding the frost off for some time.
Squirrels are always out in the winter. They stay huddled up inside on the coldest days but get busy stealing the food from the birds feeders on the warmer sunny days.

Been hauling hay on frozen soil for a few weeks now. I guess it is wet enough that is is solid out there.
Snowmobile trail guy crossed our lake and took ice measurements to ensure safety on the trail, said it was a foot of ice. I thought that was pretty darn thick for now.
Better get out there and finish it up it looks like!

In our neck of the woods the gophers mostly all drowned out in the flood years and have never really come back. I expect it will change at some point. We have a small gravel knoll in a pasture that was always a big Garder snake den. The flood years pretty well killed all of them off too.
