We visited Mexico about 15 years ago with an American grain broker. We were shown the life of rich Mexicans at their homes, markets and manufacturing/storage facilities. They live in total fear of kidnapping. The marketers live in obscure double-walled, guarded country villas, Doberman’s at every corner, they drive old Mercs, golf with body guards and dare not send their kids to school. They told us the problem is the Spanish mafia. The gangs work for them and kidnap rich people and their children. If the ransom is slow coming, they lop off their ears, noses, fingers and send them home in boxes until the family comes up with the ransom money. This broker protected us with guards at all times, even when using the washroom. Tourists don’t realize how close they are to disaster. By the time we got outta Mexico, we sent our wills home by mail. We were glad to get back to Texas and were cured of desire to wander around Mexico.
Lex Fridman has an interesting interview with Ed Calderon discussing this subject.
