Try it for a few weeks.

It kind of grows on you.

Should be manditory if you have small kids.

      I couldn't understand men past 40 something when I was in 20s and 30s.
Now I get it. Decades of focusing on the destination. Now it's about the journey.

I got to help my 3 year old daughter catch her 1st fish a few days ago. The chores can wait.

Heres the 100kph report, edmonton to regina.

Not too shabby closer to edmonton, again any cereals are holding on fairly well. Looks like guys were just in with fungicides. Canola is a mixed bag, quite a few patchy shortish crops in bloom, but it also looks like a lot of later stuff is coming in the open spots. Not sure if that was flooded or just no moisture to start.

Conditions hold about the same until an hour from Lloyd and then its better most of the way to NB. From NB to Saskatoon to the Qu'Appelle Valley deteriorates quite a bit then pretty nice once you get closer to Regina.

          Everywhere needs a drink.

Sure is a lot of canola seeded. May not be a bin buster but the acres might tip the balance.

Ironically some pretty poor crops right around the AIM site.

And I should mention, this was not a crop tour, just coming back from waterpark in WEM for the kids.

Did you stop and walk into a good looking field. Me thinks you’d be in for a surprise……

I have to agree I thought the canola looked like crap most of the way to Edmonton.

Just did Regina to Big River over to PA, Tisdale then down to wadena to fort and back to Regina today.

Don’t ask why in one day I did this trip. Got a special tractor and had to get it home today.

I was shocked how from Lumsden to Davidson and then Saskatoon you see canola failing and failing fast. No rain will bring this back. Maybe a little fill but that’s it. Shutting down.

North of Saskatoon to Blainlake you see it’s running out of gas.

North of that and over to melfort good. Melfort to Tisdale you see they need a drink.

Wadena south gets better till valley then good till regina.

Now yes a rain shower here or there and crop could be better in areas described.

Two more weeks and Houston we have a major problem.

Another hot week here which looks to continue into next week………..

Hauled the bulls out to pasture and theres always something interesting when you handle them. Found a two year old with a broken leg in the bush quarter we brought them in from and managed to get him loaded in a trailer. The packer we deal with was able to take him right away which is great. Ironically we have a heifer that has been hanging in his cooler for two weeks as well. Freezer space will be cozy around here for a bit😉

Still whittling away at clearing old fencelines, landscaping, and getting ready for new posts and wire. Definitely a bigger project than we figured on but will be very nice when completed. There was even a sale on gates the other week which is great🍀

These two pictures were taken about 100 feet from each other and neither has been grazed this year. One is 30 year old pasture vs 3 year old pasture which is preforming way better than I expected. Our best crop insurance for the feeding the cattle seems to be rotating the pastures out regularly.

                  Four picture limit. Continued below😉

Last week a colony up north sold a load of 550 lbs steers for $4.10 which is kinda mind blowing. The feeders must be optimistic the good times are sticking around for a while which is great.

Hopefully those prices will stick around long enough for these little guys to enjoy them as well.

Our late seeded crops are preforming way better than we figured. The further away fields don’t get checked very often so it often a surprise one way or the other. Expectations are usually kept low around here to have less stress and frustration 😉

This was seeded May 28 and hopefully it’ll make it to the finish line and amount to something decent🤞 Our earlier fields will be interesting to harvest with lots of patches that came up a month late from seeds being stranded in powder. It’s all going to be feed quality most likely so not the end of the world. At least there’s something there.

The corn is enjoying the heat as always. Always impressed with how it does considering these fields were spring disked to work last years stalks in. The herd will have something this winter to munch on at least.

Now to try and get the haying equipment cobbled together and go make a few bales before the hoppers get it. With grass in short supply everything that’s fenced is getting grazed this year so less acres and bales to deal with. Can’t imagine what hay will be worth with the way things are going though?

                    Interesting times………..🍀

Seeing lots of creep feeders out in pastures lately . Some guys want to get those 5wt calves as soon as possible to cash in before the market swings.

Was in Stettler yesterday picking up parts. Started talking to a farmer I know from the Byemore area, he said they have had 1.2 inches since snow melt. I had heard it was dry but worse than I thought. I know 2 weeks ago before we started getting some rain how desperate I was planning what I was going to do if it didn’t rain. He said he normally has 21/2 to 3 years of feed stockpiled but this is 3 years in a row of dry weather. He is down to about a half a year of feed left. His barley seeded for silage is about 4 inches tall. He is hoping AFSC allows him and others to start cutting area crops for feed. He said he had a good rotational grazing system so he had grass until into September. His outlook certainly impressed me.

Maybe not for long. Gumbo can hold us in for a while yet but lots of places going to suffer next week.

All that precip now over US corn belt.
