    Combines

    Who wishes they would go back to a simpler time. Like 1997 when a combine didn't have to have so many electronics of which any thing could shut them down.

    I realize most are just combines jockeys and don't understand how to set a combine but Jesus phucking Christ can't they build something simpler with less technology for a shitload less money.

    Throw away the emissions crap too. Every dealer's solution is to delete the phucking things, why put them in the first place.


    Don't really need the complications on the last step of my work.

    Uhhhhh last time i checked you can still buy alot of those 1997 combines for pretty darn cheap? Nobody is forcing anyone to buy the new stuff...

    Father in law used to do 3400 acres a year with 3 cts combines...

        Wonder how much less a 97 CTS equipped with hopper topper and a 30' d****r header does in a day compared to an X9. Around here they do the same ac/hr when roading and a 30' header goes down the road without a header trailer in most places while a 45 does not. Ask my neighbor about that one. The only CTS I have run had a 22 ft auger table but got along well with that combine. Do not remember any breakdowns. Buddy runs 9600 equipped with 30' d****rs and I run one of them now and then. I run an MF 8570 and I am not worried about emission systems. Not much to go wrong on it but I am shopping for an upgrade mainly because this machine looks very dated. Will stick with Massey if possible. Bottom line is stick with older machinery until the industry gets the message to simplify.

          The emissions thing is government over regulation more than the manufacturers fault. Only applies to Canada and the US. I believe that the goal isn't cleaner air but rather the destruction of modern civilization. There are a few exemptions to emission regulations besides rest of the world. A couple are train locomotives, aircraft, and the US military. Apparently more important enterprises than growing food.

            First JD combine I drove was pretty hi tec one button for kill switch on header another switch for lights ( 2facing down on header and 1 pointing into hopper ) . BUT you only had to reach around and grab handfull of grain while driving to see sample. Those 55's where a beast and open station where chilly in October !

              The massage seat got tried briefly , I've requested the next ones have no massage seat but a microwave to make my popcorn . The reply was that the new 4wd 's have inverters and 110 power so the combines may soon.
              As far as the 45ft header thing we can take one in or out of the factory transport in about 5 minutes like this design , not sure I trust them on steep hills not to pull out and try and pass you though.
              SF3 you better have lots of truck power , you should be doing a super B every 20 minutes in Barley based on what we've seen so far. Between 2200-2400 Bushels a hour per machine in irrigated barley over the weekend.

                So only guys that like technology for 3 year leases should be able to buy a new combine?

                So you like emissions stuff? all the wiring that sends codes for broken wires? needing a dealer to reset your combine when derates at 3pm and they can't service it until it rains tomorrow ?

                Gotcha. But the question is why can't the manufacturers build a low end combine that experienced guys can operate.. Set it and forget it.

                Everything they add to make automatic adjustments adds another level of complexity and maintenance and parts the dealer will more than likely won't have.

                  We run 45’s FD 75’s , slow and steady but cover a lot of acres per day . They follow the ground better than the 35’s we had . Really like the new FD 2’s but they are so overpriced it’s crazy , and would not add to capacity. We can keep combines full with these old headers for now .
                  Used to run 35’s on Gleaners , that was a good match. Too bad they struggled in the front ends in canola , they are great machine otherwise.

                      Running these million dollar machines and $250k headers over peas and lentils I just don’t understand.

                      Give me a couple good 2388s or 2588s with 36’ headers. Those combines are still out there.

                      X9 in a lentil crop … ouch!!! Or any big name brand.

                      Everything is way out of reality … funny though sales are sky high. I won’t be participating in this ridiculous game!

                        I may be wrong but...
                        Here, there will be 2 types of farms someday. Those with enough economy of scale to run current models through necessity. Comfort options deleted but efficiency options standard. Employee operated more common.
                        And the farm that has no debt but the family income off farm. They will run 30 year old iron. Until you can't make the parts anymore. Then custom work will become more common.
                        I've ran a fleet of 25 yr old combines and there comes a time when efficiency and cost catches up.
                        We can make an old Big Bud or Steiger work, but not an old 860 or 1680.
                        Guy here holds high hour 8010s together with mig wire and home made mods. But not forever.
                        The bs tech is very frustrating. The necessary tech is as well but I see the value and would not go back.
                        You can only avoid it if you can build your own. Could happen if times get bad enough for sure. But not for me.

                          When FANCY tech codes, we need a switch to bypass/disable and continue in manual mode, till service gets it fixed. Stopping dead is just silly. And emissions regs are simply Gov overreach and a $$$ grab.

                          Old tech can be $$ pit, spending on them makes it worth NOT a cent more. Sad reality, demand drives values.

                          All the 10 year old inventory soon be at Ritchie's.

                            A similar concern. The failures due to outsourcing & quality/control. Bosch fuel pumps on Iveco engines. Hyd valve blocks. Fuel tanks.
                            Local dealer has seen nothing but issues. Factory or reman. NFG right out of the box. 16 fuel pumps last year alone.
                            If the manufacturer can't get reliable parts what's a farm gonna do. Scary.
