Friday crop report on a thursday!

Not in NE, HUMID, FOG every morning, showers last 2 days, combines have stopped. Barley chitted, wheat 2 or 3. Smoke never allowed wheat to dry. Only positive is canola straw in swath is rotting. Standing still not ready. Enjoy your DRY air.

Very foggy this a.m. Rolled onto a section of standing invigor canola yesterday,stalks are about 50 % green but seed is dry, very, very dry. So dry it wont even test. Does anyone have a chart on how much weight we will lose on this super dry canola.

Pretty simple if its testing 5% moisture, under 10% is dry, you are losing 5%.

No issues with straw but ya , canola went from 12 to 5 moisture in 48 hrs here

We must be back at 10-12% after RAIN...gee I guess rain makes grain, fatter seeds, more weight.

5% x 50 bu=2.5 bu x $17=$42.50 per acre?

Pretty simple if its testing 5% moisture, under 10% is dry, you are losing 5%.

Are you actually losing $5000 if it hasn’t been sold and delivered yet? Lots add H2O. Want to stop that practise then pay for shrink.

Will have zero spoilage at 5% as well and no rush to sell at low prices than with 10% canola. Grenade waiting to happen imho with the crop we took off.

So does 5% moisture cost or pay? Two ways to look at it……

Combine 7-8% make some $, plus if cool, safe storage. Life is a compromise, an average.

Actually the combine loss can increase if pepper dry. Worse if stalks dry.

We went from dry 8% roundup terminated canola to dry 8% unsprayed canola with green stalks.
Yield monitor dropped by about 4-5 bu. In the unsprayed. Didn’t think much of it at first as it was testing dry. The initial thought was maybe it was some later canola that flowered in the heat.

Next mornings field inspection told the real story. Unripe pods from the random 10% of plants in the canopy were being spat out the back of the combine. This was completely Unnoticed from the Combine cab the night before.

Oh well.. Park the combines and fire up the sprayer again.

Give the chin a good scratch and wonder if selling that swather was really such a good idea after all.

Perhaps try different combine setting before spraying.
