Theres a certain amount of diesel going up the stack (1) moving the machine, and (2) just keeping everything spinning.

Much like Australia has been pioneering 60ft straight cut headers, this particular area was running 36ft and 42ft units far before it was cool. Guys were running 36' straight cuts on 9500 deeres and 1660 cases, then 42ft on 9750 and 8010's. Back in the 80's 50ft doubles went up the front ends of 750 masseys and 7720 deeres. It was all about keeping the machine "busy" at a speed that's slow enough to be both managable and economical to push up and down the field.
