What does all the various DESICATIONS cost?

A good swath in tall stubble, rolled correctly does not move, only in whirlwinds.

Around here 2012 was a hurricane mess, but there was NONE standing to compare then.

Did everyone have a good swath in tall stubble?!? I've watched whirwinds turn my hillside canola stubble into nothing. Not a lot of tall stubble on hills in the past 5 years.

I'm sure different strokes for different folks. Nobody's wrong. We do tend to follow the crowd after all.
I just believe ripening on the stalk instead of swath leaves a fuller, more naturally ripened berry. More weight. No green. You can see it in the sample.
And I also feel that, at least until lately with new varieties, you shelled more than you thought with the swather. Can't argue that one.
And hopefully they come up with yet better technologies. Roundup sucks as a desiccant anyway.
Always need access to the sure killer, a swather. But standing here to stay even with extra combine costs.

Didnt descicate a single acre of canola, took it all straight with green stems all came off dry, some too dry, was done harvest Sept 23 and not once did I say boy I wish I spent all those zeros on bringin in the plane so it could be far too dry and overload the seives. Yields all started with a 6, green count zero everytime. To each their own.

With these podshatter varieties you can leave it stand way longer before cutting , then it’s the same as straight cut
There is no difference anymore except way slower combining, in the straight or labor/depreciation costs for swathing , risk of swaths blowing or hail on standing with the extra 2- 3 weeks
We do half and half ,wouldnt bet farm on swathing or straight , both have advantages , depends on what the old bitch throws at us
BL , if you farm where you can grow 60+ and straight cut it all without desiccation and be done in sept , well that’s a miracle for sure . Lots of heavy canola won’t go between Nipawin and PA yet , unless the roundup/heat kept it green

Havent desiccated canola in 10 yrs. Been all straight cut going on 8 yrs now.

Dessicating wheat and canola is going out of style around here. Not gaining guys much except extra costs.

Only time swather comes out is if you have a green stand a week or two after typical first frost day. Then guys get nervous.

No fungicides on wheat or canola either. Very little payback.

Next year I drop crop insurance.

You farm in a different world
I do often wonder if some of the fungicides are keeping stuff in greener longer (to long)
