Because even with the demise of CWB some important issues werenever thought out or planned very good. Still same ol same ol in some important areas.

Certainly NOT our barley, can't stand the dust, and the grading circus. Guess 75% is always combined tough then aerated or dried. The discount to feed in 2005 cost us too much to ever grow again. Beautiful crop sprouted in the heads after WET WET humid August, turned to half priced shit.

We made a lot of money back in the board days with the paid storage.
Got feed in 10 and 11 so quit after that.
High was $7.98 a bushel..after board and P&H storage added on.

met a retired malster at family gathering interesting discussion.

we had a barley which became "superseceded" oh maybe 15 if not 20yrs ago but was a good almost never fail malt except in drought years protein would go up.

had various agronomic failures which plant breeders fixed with newer types and supposed lower yielding.

anyway point is this guys says they pay a hefty premium for it for the handful of growers who still grow it and hefty I'm talking 50 to 60 bucks a tonne escpecially craft boutique brewers.

told me a lot of stuff I didn't know, Ales sort of darker beers up to 7.5% alc content here one of my favourites but those types need low protein barley wereas something like corona bright yellow they require a higher protein. Asian brewers actually specify higher protein barley outside current malt specs.

back to original question I for one may be increasing barley acres here in oz next year
