    Sprouted Barley

Seems to be more then usual amounts of sprouted barley in the initial harvest Calgary east. Weights are good but yeilds are just a little under expectations. What are you guys seeing in different areas.

We had some 5.00 canola basis for spot delivery today.

ADM 17.92 the Nov. for a $9.00 delivered. Have been as high as 26.00 the Nov last week to remain at $9.00.

Catch is it has to be in by Friday. Good news is that they pushed the delivery time last Friday to this Friday to secure seed. If it keeps frikkin raining/fog, they will have to push again if they dont buy enough seed

Just to keep the chit chat going, looking for more comments on quality. Would seem to be an ideal year for fusarium in Manitoba (maybe too cold). Wet weather would seem to open the risk of sprouting in wheat as well? I remember 2 - 3 years ago where sprout damage was not visible but enough chitting (sp?) lowering falling numbers on wheat. Green seed in canola? An extra challenging year.

I get around a bit in central Alberta with my oil field business and quite often I'll do a bit of "recreational crop scouting"! In many places I have seen a lot of disease problems in barley, canola and wheat(as well as weathering problems). And while I still expect the yields to be decent I also suspect the grades might be questionable? I have yet to see a barley crop that would make good malt...in my opinion!
The amount of grain that is flat on the ground is quite large, with new grain growing up through it and just starting to head/fill. A swathers nightmare?

Our peas have nearly every disease in the book, and have been on the wet ground for over a week. I expect yields to be 15% below our average. We sprayed for sclerotinia, but our later seeded canola is loaded. It seems area specific though, around Fort Saskatchewan the pressure isn't bad, but in Lamont County you can really see it. I haven't noticed high disease levels in my wheat - it's still standing. I did see some ergot, and will have to deal with that again this year. I heard talk of fusarium in my area - I hope it proves to be false.

I don't think we have had a frost yet, I could use ten days with at least some heat for all of my crops to make it. We are knocking down the canola, even though it is on the green side. I see temps of "0" in Red Deer and Coronation right now.

Remember: work safe and try to have some fun!!
