    UK energy up-date

GREENERGY Fuels Ltd, a fuels business with annual sales of £1-billion and a leader in the supply of premium quality biofuels, has announced that it has joined forces with shareholder Tesco to service the rapidly growing European biofuels market. Used as a blend in standard fuel mixes, biodiesel can provide security of supply through UK sourcing, and reduce the greenhouse gas emissions required if climate change commitments in the transport sector are to be met.

The partnership will enable Greenergy to extend its existing domestic and European biodiesel supply operations by building the UK's largest single-line biodiesel production facility.
Capitalised at over £10-million and scheduled to open in the second quarter of 2006, subject to the usual consents, the plant will initially have 100,000 tonnes per annum production capacity. Its intended location at Immingham on the Humber Estuary will allow cost-effective distribution across the UK and into Europe with supply of ****seed, the main oilseed for the facility, secured under existing contracts with the UK farming community.
Biodiesel is a diesel produced from the chemical conversion of agricultural oils, such as ****seed oil, produced by crushing ****seed. It is located on the east coast of England, and its markets are within the UK and mainland Europe. In Europe, biodiesel demand is rising sharply, driven by governments’ response to the European Biofuels Directive, which requires them to set targets for biodiesel usage in their country as a proportion of total diesel usage. The targets are progressive, starting at two per cent of the diesel market (350,000 tonnes of biodiesel) in 2005 and rising to 5.75 per cent (1.2-million tonnes) by 2010. The 2005 target is a five-fold increase on current biodiesel usage levels in the UK

Looks like we will soon have the real option to grow crops for energy.

2010 use would see double todays total UK canola production going for energy.

What would that do to markets both yours and mine?

EU directive too so not just UK but most of Europe today would need to use renewables.

    More questions than answers.

Is this market for canola or ****seed?

What will they do with the by product of canola/****seed? I know that Europe is protein short but will it absorb the extra production?

What are you hearing about using ****seed (high glucocinolate) as source of bio pesticides?

What are the trends in consumer demand in Europe with regards to specialty/healthy oils (i.e. low trans fats)? How are the European oilseed markets filling these needs?

Last (but not least), how are the winter crops looking?

Lots of questions Charlie I wil do my best

****seed is canola isn't it? I understood Canada renamed ****seed canola to give it a better image.I agree **** is not a word to be shouted out loud at the mall and more and more people here use canola instead espesially for the bottled oil.

Not sure on what will happen to the meal. Animal feed I presume lots of hogs in that area. Also heard of a plant which plans to burn it to produce green electricity.

Not heard about bio pesticides. GM banned here of course. The sell with GM was desiner crops for medicines and other health problems within 10years. Golden rice with vitA for third world child blindness has made the news here recently.

Nerexa has arrived. We are growing 50 acres with a £15 premium plus bonuses.
Seeded it last Monday hope we have better luck than some of the reports I have heard from Canada. Green seed is not usually a problem here. Same variety I believe though. No winter varieties available yet so very small uptake I believe.

Winter ****/canola has been flowering for about 2weeks and most fields are now totally yellow. Will flower a further 4weeks yet. New fungices for sclerotinia available this year supposed to give good yield increase and have to be applied at full flower.

Very pleased with my winter **** at moment and most crops in our area look good.

Cereals are different. Some came throught the winter very thin and there has been more reseeding than I have seen for many years. However It has been a kind spring and most of these crops a through and looking good.

Are we wrong to be using crops for energy?

There is a report in the paper about carrots today. A supermarket is flying baby carrots from S Afria. every carrot caloie delivered takes 68 fossil fuel calories to get it here.

Is this not the case for much of what is produced on the prairies.

What does your nearest customer to the south want food or energy?
