new crop barley

Yeah I know its to early (and I havent bothered growning barley for about 5 years) but agricore lacombe has Nov 2007 barley at $2.81/bu. (Sept 2.72)
Thats not bad for feed barley off the combine? Of course 3.00 is way better but maybe worth looking at?
How does high input barley yield? Last time I grew AC Harper 100 bu/ac was about the limit (and a bear to swath).
New semi-dwarves, fungicide, does it get any better? Not crop insurance guesses on silage but actual in the bin yields?
Thanks

Ron, you should probably consider contribution margin as opposed to gross value when determining value to the farmer of a particular commodity.

Mallee;

Thats about $129/t Cdn farm gate for fall 2007.

Dec 07 WCE futures say $132/t, but it is hard to know if they are actually trading there. This would be a good opportunity to go long on, if they could be traded. THis is below the Cost of production with a normal basis... and the basis being offered is good.

The new crop 07 barley contract represents barley in store in Saskatoon. So essentially 132/mt in Saskatoon represents 160 ?mt del Lethbridge. Freight would be close to $20/mt from Lacombe to Lethbridge, include their margin and their probably not far off on their bid at Lacombe.

IAMTHEMOLE is right. The WCE western barley contract changes to a Saskatoon par price with the beginning of trade of hte October 07 contract. It's likely that southern Alberta cash barley prices will be at par or a premium to futures when Oct 07 futures are the nearby month.

According to the WCE website, 25 contracts traded today in Oct western barley. Pretty thin. Closing prices for Dec and Mar 07, which didn't trade, are derived by adding a WCE-calculated spread above the Oct closing price.

In the previous post, Oct Western Barley means Oct 07.
