GrainCorp in export move
GEOFF EASDOWN, MELBOURNE
SYDNEY-BASED commodity trader GrainCorp has made the first move to export wheat under the Federal Government's new international trading arrangements.
GrainCorp yesterday announced it would seek four permits to export 230,000 tonnes of wheat. It also said it would pay growers $15 a tonne above what AWB was prepared to offer under the former national pool monopoly arrangement.
Yesterday's announcement comes less than a week after the government decided to strip AWB of its veto over other traders selling bulk supplies of Australian wheat overseas.
Under the new arrangement, Federal Agriculture Minister Peter McGauran must approve all bulk wheat sales to overseas buyers.
