Not sure what happened to the rest of my post above?
Just wondering: In answer to your question about a reduction in the cow herd and what would we do with the land: Before the federal government killed the CROW, Canada was a net importer in beef. When the CROW died, and the federal government refused to step up to the plate and fight the "grain wars" against US and European subsidies, many grain farmers had few options but to try to value add to their grain operations through livestock? The fact was their grain just wasn't worth enough to pay the bills! This created the situation where we now have to export beef/pork cattle/hogs?
If the biofuel thing turns out like it is projected(with the legislated blend) those "cow acres" can be shifted back into grain land without the necessity of exporting either grain or cattle? It is a win-win situation.
To continue my earlier post: I live in an area that is rapidly urbanizing. There are no new farmers, just urbanites escaping to their own little version of paradise!
This creates its own set of problems? They bring their kids and dogs! They trespass at will and cut fences, leave gates open. They throw their beer cans, whisky bottles, used condoms all over the pastures! They kill the alfalpha with their snowmobiles! They shoot holes in the grain bins! Or complain to the county that the combine is keeping them awake at night!!! Don't even think about spreading any manure!
Personally I would like more farm neighbors, not less? But that won't happen. This land is way to expensive for any farmer to buy.

      Cowman,

Land is an investment, we don't need to own it to farm it.

      CHeers!

                    It says:

The report, "Anatomy of the global wheat market and the role of the Canadian Wheat Board” was authored by two American economists, paid for and published by the CWB.

Krafty and Hardly Furtan didn't author it?

Still waiting for soutions and not just more problems.
Cowman on your cow acres turned back to grain acres. All of the stuff we seeded back should never have been broken in the first place to many trees/sloughs and hills. Rather than follow this diversification game I feel we need to specialize more cowmen can have their cows, grain =iron, marketing guys markets I forget whose post who said that they are surrounded by Hutterites but other than all the church it did not seem like such a bad place to be. Lots of workers specializing in what they prefer all the moonshine you could handle Parlsley could keep his/her school. I think I'll take garden boss I like raspberries
